WesBank super series at Killarney - 31 March 2012

With South Africa’s fastest cars and motorcycles in the hands of several exciting young stars, the glory days of motor racing are set to be revived during the second round of the national WesBank Super Series at Killarney on Saturday.

One of the brightest of them is 15 year old kortbroek Kelvin van der Linde who delivered a stellar performance during the first round when he won the final Engen VW Cup race after finishing second behind Bryan Morgan in the opener.

The ladies are also going to command attention. Local lass Andrea Bate has fared particularly well in the same Engen VW events while Gauteng’s Robyn Kruger recorded her first podium position during the opening meeting at the Zwartkops Raceway near Pretoria, when she finished third in her Indy Oil Polo.

Other highlights include the world debut of the latest BMW 3 Series in the Bridgestone Production Car events, in the hands of former Production Car champion Anthony Taylor and Etienne van der Linde. The Afrox competition version of the new twin turbo 335i was developed and built locally and providing it lives up to expectations at Killarney, is due to compete internationally in the 24-Hour race at the Nurburgring, later in the year.

In a surprise move, BMW have strengthened their position even more, by luring Deon Joubert out of retirement with the offer of a drive in one of the 2011 models.

The Beemers main opposition is likely to come from the Cape’s dedicated Johan Fourie in his IndyOil Audi S4. The former champion is particularly anxious to perform well on his home circuit after missing the podium at Zwartkops. Others to watch here include the Extreme Audis of Michael Stephan and Tschops Sipuka, as well as the surprisingly quick Sasol Subaru that has become a race winner in the hands of Hennie Groenewald.

While the WesBank Supercar V8 events may be dominated by the awesome Auby brothers, Marc and Jimmy, in their Ford Falcons, veteran Ben Morgenrood’s IndyOil Falcon is getting closer. Ben has probably completed more laps at Killarney than anyone else in the field and it could pay off on Saturday.

Then the single seater racing for the combined Formula VW and Formula Midas 1600 categories are likely to be the closest to Formula 1 that we will see at Killarney for a long time.

And for something completely different the 16 entries in the first ever Mr Shelf Porsche Club GT3 race includes seven race modified Porsche Cup cars.

The 16 race programme gets under way at 10.30 after the final practice and warm-up sessions. Admission is R80 for adults and R20 for scholars under 16. However there is no charge for kiddies under 12.

Join on their Facebook page. S///Mon and I will be there, in the M5 making an appearance in day light again since the oil change :)

See you guys there.

Turn 1 - I'm guessing is the 1st turn after the straight? So you guys would be on that new garage pit side right?
