Can anyone in Cape Town or surrounding area recommend a good fitment centre that can supply and fit a new Garrett turbo onto my E39 530d? Thanks

You can approach ART (All speed racing) but they have quite a few projects going so you will have to book in advance or be prepared to wait for their schedule to clear.

Has the turbo popped, or is it simply preventative maintenance at this stage?
If it's preventative, what about a turbo bearing recon only? Netercol on the forum can assist with that.

If really you need to swop out with a new unit, then Johan Venter in Hms can probably do something like this, but he won't be able to guarantee it. I've seen him working on E39's before.

Then again, if you can swing a spanner...I swopped out my 320d turbo and I'm no mechanical whizz.

No, turbo whisteling sound is (to my ear) getting louder, although when car is at normal operating temp the sound is not much louder than what it used to be. I do not want to have the turbo pop when i am driving and am trying some preventative maintenance. My idea is to replace 2003 (build date 10/2002) E39 turbo with new turbo and then replace bearings, etc., with new and keep as replacement turbo for my 2003 E53 X5 3l diesel, that is currently on about same km's (225k km). Am willing to do the replacement myself/assist with replacement if i can find someone willing to help me who has done it before (you perhaps??). Am actually worried about warranty - will Garrett guarantee the turbo if i/we do the swop?
Have done the deflapping myself the day i got the car, have worked on most of my cars all my life and have a few spanners and other tools in my garage, and have time (am retired). Would love to do the swop on my E39 so that i can see what is involved and maybe do the swop on my X5 at a later date.
I understand that it is possible to remove the turbo from below. Will most definately not touch the injectors if i do not have to!! See that the top bolts of the turbo is accessable from the aircleaner housing and the rest from below. When the guys at Supaquick did the decat i saw that the turbo was quite accessable.
