No, turbo whisteling sound is (to my ear) getting louder, although when car is at normal operating temp the sound is not much louder than what it used to be. I do not want to have the turbo pop when i am driving and am trying some preventative maintenance. My idea is to replace 2003 (build date 10/2002) E39 turbo with new turbo and then replace bearings, etc., with new and keep as replacement turbo for my 2003 E53 X5 3l diesel, that is currently on about same km's (225k km). Am willing to do the replacement myself/assist with replacement if i can find someone willing to help me who has done it before (you perhaps??). Am actually worried about warranty - will Garrett guarantee the turbo if i/we do the swop?
Have done the deflapping myself the day i got the car, have worked on most of my cars all my life and have a few spanners and other tools in my garage, and have time (am retired). Would love to do the swop on my E39 so that i can see what is involved and maybe do the swop on my X5 at a later date.
I understand that it is possible to remove the turbo from below. Will most definately not touch the injectors if i do not have to!! See that the top bolts of the turbo is accessable from the aircleaner housing and the rest from below. When the guys at Supaquick did the decat i saw that the turbo was quite accessable.
