Just ensure your rims are to 1 series specs: fronts aren't wider than 8" with an offset of 38+. Rears 9" with offset 38+. Less on the offset, greater on the widths and you'll need to start rolling fenders. If I remember correctly the VMR's are 8.5" f and 9.5" r but have higher offsets (45 / 48) so do fit well. However I have spent endless hours researching VMR's and the finish from numerous reports does not seem to hold up well. Problem with a lot of reps is they are gravity-cast (cheapest production technique) and can be weak and prone to cracking. VMR's are also gravity-cast (can't comment on strength). If you've got a cool R18k+ then you have better options - BMW Performance wheels - and my personal favourite the OZ Alleggeritta's (strong and very light) @ R21k a set. These are all low-pressure cast with the OZ's using 'HLT' production technique to ensure a wheel almost as strong as that which is forged.

And if you run rears @ 9" and ET38 or lower you will need to stick to 245's on the rear (and a tyre with a rounded shoulder). 255+ will rub.

Don't forget the Alufelgen CS7 and SF7 also low pressure cast which fit perfectly. Frankly at this point in time I will stick with the 261M wheels. The 313 Performance rim et al is only 0.5-1.0kg lighter and for the price I'll rather upgrade the suspension or add a power kit.

I'll put my neck on the line, contradict myself, and state that the VMR's are too close for comfort what with 9.5" and 50 ET on the rear, I'm pretty sure it's very close to a rub, especially if you go the 255 route + tyres with hard shoulders. After much research, I'd either go stock (261, 264, 313 etc), Alufelgen (9" at rear with high 40's offset) or Breyton GTS-R's. I'd love to get my hands on the latter but importing is $$$ and after all they are average in quality: made in China / very light / probably pretty weak. They are ~8kg a wheel, with the OZ's ~8.5kg. Problem I have with my CSL reps is they are like 0.2mm wider than the centre bore spec (72.6mm) so I get a little vibration which will wear components (bearings etc) faster. Something you need to be careful about if buying aftermarket unless it's a decent brand. Now I'm after stock rims.

'gerrit01' is completely correct, those Performance rims aren't very light at over 10kg each (maybe fronts are in the 9's) but are low-pressure cast and fairly strong. Too light often means quite weak unless from OZ ('HLT' etc) or spending $$$$$$$$$ on forged wheels.

Also if you have stock or close to stock offsets you can run springs or coilovers with no issues. I had Eibach Pro-Kit on the MK5 GTI and frankly the car was sharper into corners / exhibited less 'bounce' / lift than my 135i with sports suspension. Aftermarket with aggressive offsets and you can't go this route.
