V10 itch.... scratched :)

So after reading all your comments, listening to the google and the YouTube for hours I still couldn’t help myself!

Picked up an 07 e60 m5 with 92k km this morning.
I did as much homework as I could possibly do on this specific car and now I can just hope for the best.

First impressions of the car is great. The gearbox is very slow but the engine makes up for it. Fuel consumption is horrific. I knew it would be, but it is still scary to see.
Highway cruising is an absolute pleasure and the V10 makes more power at cruising speeds than I thought it would, obviously loves to rev, but picks up nicely at 120kph in 7th.

I’m only going to use the car over weekends, but I’m still planning to get all the preventative maintenance issues sorted. Car has had clutch replaced at a dealer earlier this year. During the pre inspection before I bought the car they picked up the power steering pump leaking slightly, radiator hose leaking slightly and it needs control arm bushes. I’m not sure what slightly means in BMW dealer speak but hoping it’s not serious (the quote they give me was serious though). Tyres are still looking good but are 8 years old so will need to look at changing those as well.

So in the near future I’m planning to do:
Rod bearings
Vanos pipe
Engine mounts
Power steering pump (wouldn’t mind some advice on recon vs new)
Bushes (again advice on options would help)
Tyres (thinking of PS4S)
Any other items I need to look at?

While the car is in I might as well look at the exhaust. What are my options here? I don’t want to spend stupid money but want to open up the sound a bit without having any droning while cruising.

Sorry I see the thread posted 3 times. Stupid internet connection.

Almost forgot the pics...

Congrats bud  absolutely adore the e60 m5 's, must be such a great experience driving around in a 4 door f1 car, fuel consumption will never be an issue with an engine tone like that! Honestly the best sounding v10 imho

Congratulations man,
Serious car, which I think it’s not easy to lose money on especially if you do the preventative items (per your action list)

Most of all, enjoy it! Many happy miles

Congrats, that is a beautiful car. I had my power steering pump reconditioned by TuneTech, once done it never had a issue or a leak again.

One more thing you may want to check is your smg pump. When you open your door how long does it prime for and how often it primes, you can hear a electric sound from under car, its the pump running.

Congrats on a beast of a machine.

Interesting that it doesn't have the shadowline trim around the windows.

Thanks

The smg pump primes for a few seconds when opening the door. I’ve been told to wait for the pump to finish doing its thing before I start the car. What should I be looking out for when it’s on its way out?

There a few ways, so in my experience it can be leaking so losing pressure and causing the pump to work (when you hear it working constantly) to hold pressure up, the pump eventually overheats and takes a break. Then the pump itself is going out, in this scenario it is not a constant buzzing under the car but a intermittent tired sound when opening the door.

A new pump on opening the door for me worked for about 4-6 seconds then off. Once you begin driving and shifting, pressure decreases and pump fills it up again at 4-6 seconds of running. It should give you comfort though that Tunetech have a refurb solution for the whole pump assembly that would cost around 15k or there about if need be. That 15k is a fraction of the cost for a whole new pump assembly.

But enough about the issues, let's get to why you bought it (The filth that is a v10 )

Here is a option: Straight piped v10 this was my car and the windows were up.

Congrats!!
Arguably the best naturally sounding BMW ever!
wishing you many happy trouble free miles!

knowing what you getting yourself into certainly makes you brave, but these cars deserve to be loved for the next generation so Im glad guys like you exist.

I remember still being in High school when I first seen one of these beast at the JHB international Motor show, I remember the guy starting it up every hour and I was like just wow, I also remember the Top Gear episode where Clarkson is disappointed with it but then in 'M' mode he compares it to an F430 which he previously had high praise for.

Wow that sounds amazing! Not sure I’m going to go that wild, half of my decision was based on the car having isofix. Car is going to tunetech next week, will see what is the best compromise then. Would love this kind of sound, but don’t want it to drone when cruising..
