It depends on the router itself, I use 2 TP LINK routers and bounce the signal from one to the other to cover the YARD. It does work but it is complicated. Also disable the DCHP on the router you are using as the wifi extender, this will help a lot as the router will not give internet access if this isnt done correctly.

My main router is a TP LINK ADSL2+ MODEM ROUTER AC1750 and it has a function under wireless of that allows me to bridge this router with another one. Only this one needs this function, WDS I think is the setting whereby I enter the MAC address of the 2nd router in.

My second router is TP LINK ADSL2+MODEM ROUTER 300 W8970 and here I disabled the DCHP as it creates either no connection with the main router or it interferes with the IP address allocation which work now and then. Disabling the DCHP is giving me a constant connection. Lets put it this way, i can wifi from my gate of the complex to inside my house :smilebounce:

Hope this helps, but you will need a router that has this option under wireless setting on router. I have a telkom router and couldnt get that thing working with the 2nd router.

Oh ya, I bounce both the frequencies 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz

My main router is in my bedroom, and the 2nd router is in the opposite of the house in the garage. Wireless connected to each other, no wires :smilebounce:

I am sitting with the same problem: trying to connect my one D-Link router as an extender to the main one in the lounge.

I will try your diy link for the Netgear router.

I can't see such a function and my IT professional said he friend the same thing with his D-link router but Telkom has locked the firmware. I need to run a cable to do this. Which I didn't want to do because of the location.

Look into a Ethernet over Power device.

A modem with this function is going to set you back R2500 average. Maybe consider this in the future as you can link this current modem with that one then.

Sorry to hear you dont have this function, Cost me R5K to do this in my house to wifi over 2 modems, but it is worth it at the end :smilebounce:

We have such devices at work. I can vouch that it will definitely be a good option.

Just for consideration and my experience. I am a novice to wifi etc but research and conversation helped allot.

I replaced my Telkom router with many other routers and extenders, but nothing worked best as my current setup.
The Tenda

Nova mesh system.
I purchased the Nova MW6 mesh system for R2900 from Scoop.
It comes in 3 cubes (10cm x 10cm). All 3 are identical. One is used to replace the main router. Set up that which is Very easy. Then place the other two in your house at the main points you want and, power them and within a minute they connect automatically to the main.
The Nova mesh 3 cube covers 500m2 and in my experience covered all my dead spots. It is intelligent. One ssid. Triband. self healing. Auto switching between bands etc. also faster ping latencies.

Don’t think I will go back to conventional routers. It’s highly rated in industry and gives the Google mesh benchmark system a run. Best value for money. One of the many google videos below.
It solved all my fiber wifi issues.

As mentioned. My experiences.

Hope it can assist you.
