USB Port for iPod

Hi
First of all, I'm new and I'm very impressed with this forum. It's a great place for info.

Secondly - I got a new X6 for Valentine's Day and want to use my iPod in the USB port in the cubbyhole, but it doesn't work. The guys at BMW do not know what cable i should get, or if it plays off the iPod or if it downloads from the iPod onto the onboard computer. If anybody has information for me, I would appreciate it.

I also would like to know if anybody here has upgraded their Sat Nav to a 3D system and if so, how do I go about it.

Thanks and safe driving
:ty:

The USB port should have a 3.5mm auxiliary jack next to it. The cable you require from BMW has a USB and 3.5mm jack on one end, which goes into the vehicles respective ports and on the other end will be the iPods connection, which goes into the iPod of course.

Thanks for the reply - it was quick!

No, that is the AUX between the front seats. I currently have my iPod plugged in there. There is an additional USB port in the cubby for (apparently) iPod playback via the sound system. If you plug the iPod in, the steering wheel buttons will allow you to scroll forward and backward to select tracks.

It doesn't happen on the AUX between the seats (rear AUX), you have to manually select tracks on the iPod or skip or whatever you want to do.

The guys at BMW have tried several y-cables, but the iPod just shows 'connecting' on the screen. I have tried a new Nano and iPod5 - same story.

Oh this is kak news for you mate. :yuck:

Your X6 doesn't have a 2nd USB port in the centre arm rest right? Ok, it needs one next to the 3.5 jack in order to work the iPod. The USB in the cubby is only used for downloading songs into your BMW's internal hard drive, it cannot be used for iPod integration or used to play music directly off a USB flash.

The USB in the arm rest cannot be retrofitted onto your vehicle like earlier models. Your best bet is to copy songs onto your hard drive.

Ok, hold on. I just found something on the net that could just help. Apparently all BMW's that are 2011 onwards have a unit called "combox" fitted to them if they have the professional navigation. If you in this boat then the normal white Apple USB cable that comes with an Ipod will connect directly to your vehicles USB port. But this only works the latest Ipods, which is 5th gen i think?

Thank you for your response, Ash.

Yes, I do have the 2nd USB port, which is what I'm using now like I did in my previous BMW.

For the USB in the cubby I have tried different white Apple cables, different y-cables available from BMW and different iPods. The Nano displays 'Connected' on the screen but the car's Multimedia doesn't pick it up and the iPod 5 just plays through its own little speaker like it does when you don't plug head phones in. There has to be a way, I'm sure of it, otherwise how will I download the music to the onboard computer?

I will try the Apple guys although they never seem to be helpful in these matters either.

If I find a solution, I will post it here.

PS: I'm not a dude :=):

Sorry about that :roflol::roflol::roflol:

Hope you manage to find a solution as i'm in a dead end. But why not use the on board hard drive, instead of the Ipod?

BTW, welcome to the forum. Seeing you're a new member, why not post a little about yourself and your vehicle in the showroom section?

Thank you again - I have all my music on my iPod, how do I get it to the onboard hard drive if I cannot download it from my iPod? Am I missing the plot here? Please forgive me, it's the first time I have this technology in a car.

I'll go find the showroom section and post the details there - thanks!

Itunes handles all of your music/vids on your Ipod and your music should be stored on your PC somewhere, which is used by Itunes. Therefore get them loaded from your PC onto a USB flash which in turn can be used in your vehicles USB port.

I'm with you - the iTunes library...

Just seems so much easier if they would allow you to download songs from your iPod, because I don't want my entire library on my iPod nor in my car and to go through the library manually is a job and a half. The iPod has already created playlists and selective playback - would be so much easier to download from there.

I guess BMW should have a get-together with Apple :rollsmile:
