Howzit guys,

I drive a 2002 E39 525i (110k on the clock)

For a couple of mornings I have noticed a very loud whining noise that sounded like a belt, I took it to the mech but of course when I got there the noise was gone, so they checked anyway and came to the conclusion that it was a belt pully, so they replaced, the next morning the noise was back, but it goes away after about 5 mins of driving.

Anyway this morning the noise was HECTIC loud and sounded like a bearing? I didnt have time to go to the mechanic as I had hard core deadlines at work, now tonight as I got home my girl friend noticed what looked like smoke coming from all around the car, so I checked temp guage just in case but it was fine, opened the bonnet and saw that radiator water was leaking everywhere.

Its too dark to really see exactly where its comming from, I have a feeling its the water pump, or its a burst pipe thats been leaking onto a belt causing the noise but not sure why that would go away after 5 mins of driving? wouldnt that get worse as the pressure builds?

So anyway if it is the water pump, how much am I looking at and can I hook that up from say Midas etc ? and can I fit it myself? or is it a big job?

is there anyone you guys could refer me to in the Boskruin area?

Thanks guys.

Have you checked the expantion tank, thats the bottle where you put in the coolant for the radiator.
I know they have a tendancy to go, normally crack open on one of the corners.
When mine went a few months back it looked like a steam locomotive under my bonnet, and then water everywhere.

It is not to bad a DIY. And Yes you can get at Midas. About R800. I did do a diy about it but the 5 series is a bit more difficult. But it CAN BE DONE

had similar issues with my E36 325i...load squeeling noise, follwed by water pump shaft failure, followed by fan connected to waterpump, running out-of-centre, striking the radiator and destroying all the fan blades as well as the radiator.

sounds like thats the problem to me.....

from a cost and downtime I hope not....but I think I might be right.

Loosen fan belt and turn water pump by hand - is the pulley wobbling ? Any play on shaft front to back ? any noise ? Space is a problem , will take time to remove and replace items . if time allows take pump off if culprit and check when getting new one that its the same - no of pipes fitting on etc .
Good luck .
