Urgent Help on a 335i

Hi guys, i am a recent owner of a E90 335i, last week i noticed the car is smoking when i come to a stop, the car is still under MP, the problem is that i have an aftermarket exhaust and bmw wont sort it out until i put the std exhaust back.

Now i have the std exhaust but the guys who did the exhaust cut the downpipes, i need to borrow someones stock 335/135 downpipes just to take it in tomorrow to sort out the smoking

2. Is it a complete exhaust system from the primary cats right up to the rear mufflers. Or does it run from the secondary cats onwards.

3. How did they manage to cut the cats? There are so many places on the exhaust...why did they have to cut the cats? The primary cats are in the region of R16 000 from the dealers...i think.

4. Do you have a tune on the car? Do you have catless downpipes in? The smoke could be caused by the fact that the catalytic sensors are not there or damaged.

5. But the smoke could also be caused by old oil...blow by oil etc...so many possibilities.

howzit,
it has full exhaust, not sure why they had to cut the downpipes.
the car is stock with catless downpipes.
I noticed that the oil levels is sitting at halfway.

could it not be the valve stem seals ?

Before you consider the worse case scenarios someone has to look at the exhaust itself and especially those Lambda sensors. When you remove all 4 cats on the car it releases more smoke than usual and a nasty smell in the mornings and when at idle because the filtering system have been removed. So with cats removed you will have some smoke under accelleration, but it should not be excessive.

X35s are notorious for smoking after awhile due to all the blowby oil sitting in the turbos, intercooler and chargepipe and finding its way back into the engine. This blowby of smuck is normally reduced or eliminated with an oil catch can. But you may have lots of oil alreadyy in the turbos or IC...which is now blowing out at the exhaust. But i am speculating now.

Are you close to the Dent Doctor or chiplogic that could scan the car for you; before you consider the dealership. The scan will give one some sense of what to double check.

I was only suggesting that if you cannot find OEM DPs.

Ps. The car will also not be running well without a tune to extract the extra power of the exhaust. I am also not sure if you have "catfoolers" in place to prevent the car from going into limp mode or reduced power.

Eish bru. We have a forum full of 35 experts here. You should post before doing mods. Cutting the downpipes is like future suicide in terms of motorplan or if you wanna sell the car.

I would worry about the valve stems. Is the smoke white or black?
The rear 135 downpipe wont fit on your car. Get some codes read at Dent Doctor he is in Boksburg so round the corner from you chances are nothing is usually picked up when its smoke related. Is the car behaving normally besides the smoke, is it worse when the car is hot or cold.

i bought the car about 2 weeks with the aftermarket exhaust on the car,not sure what viper were thinking when they cut the pipes.
The smoke is white, there is no smoke through the gears, only when i come to a halt .
Can someone please give me dent doctors number.
The car is behaving normal when hot or cold.
Mileage is 79700

Hi guys i ran a diagnostic on the car and the only error that was thrown was catalytic error.
Do you guys think that Viper did not put the mini cats back ? what else can i check ?

We are trying to assist you remotely...so our advice is a shot in the dark:

1. My post #6 & 8 may still have relevance.

2. The catalytic code is a good indication that the car is not running 100%. But because it is a strong code that wants to be fixed first; it may be masking the other issues the car may have. So after you sort out the exhaust/cats the other "real" codes may re-appear.

3. I say, you need to look at the entire exhaust again. Perhaps a pic of the stock exhaust will help so that we know exactly what has been cut away. The instal or non install of the cat foolers is an issue (my post #8) but if they have cut your cats it is also possible they have damaged your lambdas. So a proper check of the entire exhaust is necessary. And then you can continue to troubleshoot from there.

Just a quick question, you said you bought the car two weeks ago. How did it pass the quality check with an aftermarket exhaust ? Tell the dealer you bought it from to have it sorted out. Most car dealers are bound to give 30 days or 1000 km's warranty. Follow it up.
