just for my own curiosity, is there something special to watch out for, I drive older technology BMW's (E38/E39), and apart from losing the fuel consumption data, its not an issue to disconnect the old battery and install a new one.

am I missing something here, is there something wierd and worse that happens on the newer generation BMW's ? if one simply disconnects the old battery and fits a new one.

Disconnect and replace. Nothing to it.
If you have a Bmw battery charger you can supply power connected to the front power stump under the bonnet. Then you can remove the battery without losing power or data. The charger will maintain the correct voltage supply

I just swopped mine for a new one no problem. Been on for a year.

Some people say you need to code the new battery

I also read you might need to code it
