Unexpected Friday Purchase: 1983 E12/8 528i Manual

I did not expect to purchase a car today, but as it worked out I did! :)

Seller was a friend of my Gran's and she was desperate that the car did not end up like the majority of other old BMW's. She and her now deceased husband bought the car in 1983, so naturally there was an attachment to the car.

Even though the car is not mint, its honest and in the end it was a no brainer to scramble late on a Friday afternoon and "do the deal".

I have all the original books, and a stamped book up until 100k, the last 14 years the car has been looked after my friends in the church, she says oil was changed regularly, and I believe her, but obviously no proof moving forward.

She SMOKES like a chimney and the tappets make a racket but "besides" that she is pretty solid. (did 60km in her today, and had her up to 140kph) Clutch, gearbox and brakes are fine. Engine has never been opened.

Leather is worn but not torn.

ALL in ALL its a car thats been owned by an old lady and its been kept running, no more, but it HAS NOT been abused, which I like.

LET the GREAT restore BEGIN!

Here she is: (Some more pics tomorrow)

@splintheter - awesome purchase.
the old m20 and m30 motors, when they have leaky valve cover gaskets, sometimes oil can run down and "pool up" by the spark plugs, eventually finding its way down the threads and getting "burned" causing smoke.

if you warm the car up and you rev the crap out of it, drive it excessively hard for a bit, if you find she then starts smoking much less or not at all, you can bet youre burning leaking oil....

Its quite possible as it has done 2000km in 8 years, so it has been sat :)

To scared to push the old girl, because the tappets are so loud :rollsmile:

MAN I used to love these 528s, my uncle had the same colour and that thing was a beast in the early 90s.

Congrats and looking forward to the restoration:tiptoe:.

Excellent, I love BMW's so I am definitely a fan!!! Keep us updated on the restoration, perhaps adding some ///M-bits to that motor while you are at it to give it a bit more kick. :blowheart:
