Tyre life

How long should run flats last on a Cooper S?

Mine have done 13000km and not looking happy. I had them rotated at 10000km and the guy at Hi-Q reckons they should be rotated every 5000km.

Driving still is not fast and I don't spin wheels and occasionally get enthusiastic through corners ;)

Thanks :thumbs:

Hey bro

I don't think the tyres last too long.

My wife's S did about 15k on brand new tyres and they are almost due for replacement.

Most of the time the car is driven properly unless I jump in every now and then:rollsmile:

I have a normal driving and time to time i like to play, however i have sportcontact 3 runflat and i swop them every 10k, but the front tyres will always do 15k to 20k iffff i am lucky..
I also dont like paying R11k for 4 new tyres, i always feel ive been violated...and it frickying hurts!
Overseas these tyres go for half the price...

Ive also considered putting non-runflats, but motorplan may become an issue...

Alignement and balancing all ok. Now the next question is what runflats do I go for and where is best in CT?

in SA for that size, I have only found pirelli or continental... I prefer continental as they are a bit more softer... specially here for joburg...
both of them are very good, and the price difference I think its about R200/300 each, at least this side of town!

One thing to keep in mind with the MINI is the handling set up. :thumbdo:

The rear tyres have quite a strong camber on them (I think its camber) so the inside of the tyres wears quite quickly on the rear.

The front are of course handling all the horsies so we used to recommend clients rotate every 5000km to keep the wear even.

Most clients were getting about 25 000 to 30 000km out of RFT doing this. :thumbs:

This is basically like asking "how long is a piece of string" :=):

It depends on too many variables, which is why manufacturers give you a very broad range of life.
Tyre life is dependant on:
Vehicle;
Camber;
Alignment;
Driving Style;
Engine(auto vs Manual);
Road Surface;
Environmental conditions;
Tyre Pressure;
and probably much more than I have listed.

As a consequence, its quite possible, that you are experiencing normal wear for the car you drive, how you drive it, where you drive it, how you inflate it and much more.

Or its possible that you are experiencing irregular wear and tear.

In either instance, you can only hope to monitor and adjust the conditions which you are in control of:
Tyre pressure;
Driving style;
Alignment;
Camber;

Things like altitude, humidity, driving surface (gravel laden, slick, rough, pothole ridden, wet, sharp) are beyond reasonable control.

I have had two punctures on the same tyre in a 6 month space. The tyre just doesnt feel the same, and it still has about 50% life. I have to change it soon, as its the only thing between me and the road.

I dont ever spin tyres, always check pressure and drive enthusiastically from time to time.

Tyre guys in general are not to be trusted (they are like Verimark salesman in my opinion). They will say rotate every 5000km, because its R400 for them 3 times a year to rotate, balance and align your tyres.

Its a load of crock.

I scheme take them into a trusted tyre place and have them diagnose the issue. Could be just poor inflation, alignment or something silly.

Best of luck and let us know if you find anything out.

If you really want your tires to last longer and you sure the alinement is right you need to play with tire pressure and make sure its right all the time... dont just get they guy at the petrol station to check thats pointless...

now seeing as you are eating your tires give them more pressure because then they will run cooler and last longer... if you put too much pressure your tires could start wearing from the middle or they could run cold giving you less grip...
