Two weeks later car is at BMW

So after 2 weeks of ownership, my E90 335i is in at BMW for a couple of niggles:
  1. Car idle is very rough when starting from cold
  2. There is a clunk when starting from cold - sounds like it comes from gearbox. This is intermittent and sometimes happens when car has been off for as little as 10 minutes.
  3. When coming to a stop there is a hard downshift from 2nd to 1st
  4. Slight misfire when idling normally.
  5. Sounds like pulley or belt making a noise

Car is being kept overnight to check the cold start issues. Going to pick up a loaner but hope it is something decent as I am going to miss the power

These aren't major issues buddy

The gearbox issues will be solved with a software update and adaptation reset:thumbs:

Misfire is most likely plugs or the coils

Pulleys are common faults on most BMW's:thumbs:

Jeez, had that same symptoms on the X5 and turned out to be gearbox, had to replace gearbox at ZF after the car went into limp mode.

But might not be the same as the 2 cars are worlds apart. Good luck:thumbs:

Yep - not to phased about these issues. Not sure if previous owner had the car in for the recalls.

While there is MP I will use if for every noise or slight niggle

Welcome Mate !

Your 5 points describe exactly EVERY issue I've had with my E90 335i. So I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one with this combination of snags. As Singh said..! Firstly the clunking on start AND the hard downshift you are getting SHOULD be remedied with a software upgrade for the gearbox. At very least they will reset the adaptation values of the Gearbox so it will take adaptation values based on your driving style. The box may also need a trans fluid flush. BMW says the fluid has an unlimited life but ZF themselves (the box manufacturer) says the GA6HP19TU that is fitted to the 335i should have a fluid flush every 40000to 60000km?? So I had that done too. The hard downshift on mine was soled but it did return. Another adaptation reset and it was fine again. The clunking still pops up every now and them but it's VERY rare now. The rough Idle was down to plugs in my case but I insisted on them checking the coil packs and injectors 'cos any of the 3 can cause rough idle AND your slight misfire. Is you car still on motorplan?

Still have 7 months Motorplan left. Mileage is currently on 62000km. I estimate I will be on 75000km when Motorplan expires. Will definitely extend it as I will only need time.

rough idle on start up sounds like injectors, they had to change all 6 of mine before it was fixed. get used to taking your car in cause it will go in for lots more.

My wife is going to kill me if that is the case  With all the problems I had with the 320i I promised her that the BMW sixers are more reliable than the 4 cylinders.

She comes from a family of Merc drivers and the other brother-in-laws have all assimilated into the Merc family over the years. When I was getting all the problems with the 320i they were on my case to get a Merc.

Ironically the courtesy car BMW gave me is a C180 :biglol: There was a time I was considering getting a C class but one night in the C180 and I will stick to my BMW.

Fat Tom was on the money! You are gonna have a few visits more. But that's what motorplan is for! Ha ha ha. I'm pretty anal about things when it comes to my car so I take it in for everything. Maybe a little overkill at times! But in the end it's worth it. I'm BMW all the way. Was offers a C63 for a steal a little while ago. But stuck with the 335i. Merc is for geezers brother! Ha ha ha

So after the first visit, all BMW did was load new software and they found the air filter housing loose which was causing a rattle.

Took the car back on Thursday as the rear brake light popped and they needed the car booked in to change bulb :nonono:

Car was still doing the clunking noise on start-up so asked them to call the service manager so I can point out the noise. He said sounds like gearbox. End result is that they picked up an error on gearbox and opened a case with BMW. Techie said that process will be first oil flush. Then if error still exists BMW will tell them whether to replace faulty part in gearbox or replace the whole gearbox. Techie said the problem is not common but he has previously come across a similar fault.

remember to extend the plan before 80k km for time only, as above 80k km you don't have the option to extend by time only and have to extend time and mileage.

Jeepers dude. The issues with the box are identical to mine was also told it's not common but I'm starting to think otherwise. If you don't mind saying, which dealership are you using?

I am using Auto Atlantic - bought car from them in November. The car was in before for the same issue and the could not pick up the noise but reset the software. This time I asked for the service manager to come sit in the car while I started it. Immediately he picked up the noise and said it sounds like gearbox.

They waiting on advice from Bmw Germany on how to proceed.

I have actually driven to Sun City with the car as is, a whole 1500km :=): Car performed effortlessly. The only time you can pick up that something is wrong is when you start the car and when pulling away from a stop. At startup there is the clunk and in first gear there is a slight rumble. The rumble though sounds like it is coming from the diff.

So car went in today for gearbox flush. To me it feels worse than before :thumbdo: There is now a pronounced lag when pulling away, and then power kicks in. It actually sounds and feels like the car is labouring.

Sometimes it feels like it is keeping the gear longer than it should, and this is not in DS mode.

I was told to drive the car for 500km and then bring it in for them to run diagnostics again. As soon as I pulled away from Auto Atlantic I could hear and feel that the original problems are still there.

Lets hope I get a new gearbox out of this.
