Tuning E46 F/L 318i

Been thinking about what I can maybe do to my car next year- if funds allow and I save enough:rollsmile:

Want to make my car a bit faster- not a monster- cause then I'd rather sell it and buy something else. Just a bit faster with better acceleration.

I find with first gear that there is quite a big power lag- Is this normal on my car? It takes one or two seconds to bring all the power when I accelerate from 1st gear.

My main thing is sound though- and for that(the very little I know about cars) there is only a free flow.

Lastly is maybe a chip or something.

My dad sent our Landy to Rob Green a few years ago for a stage 1- It has a '99 528i engine in it. It sounds so awesome, it makes chicks panties wet:mmm::mmm::mmm::mmm:

Obviously thats wayyyyy to expensive and probably a waste of money on a 318.

What do you guys suggest I can do to make it a bit faster and make it sound swwweeeeeeet:inlove:

You could do exhaust to make it sound better , but even with stage 1 you will only see minor improvements and you will get used to that too very quickly .

not to be funny or rain on your parade, but i reckon there is very little you could do on a e46 318 to make it noticable faster than it already is.. (except turbo or supercharging it, even so not worth the money i think)
if you have your heart set on more, selling and trading up is just the most sensible option..

Dont want to make it that much faster. Its mainly for a sound effect thing.

What about chipping it?

Would a chip and free flow improve the economy a bit?

Keep the 318i stock IMHO, it will be a plus when you re-sell, besides return on investment would be minimal. saw a e90 320i(same engine as e46 318i) turbo once;performance was not anything to write home about; a 330 would still give it a run for its money.

Doing the exhaust on a 318 WILL make it sound like a 323.... a Mazda 323(don't do it)

So basically a waste of money then? And chipping it for the fuel economy? I'll spend the money on new LED lights and halogen Fog lamps!:rollsmile:

you have to understand that chipping a small capacity na engine is not going to give noticable gains, and it sure as hell is not going to improve fuel economy..
remember that bmw have already spent 1000's of hours on a dyno perfecting the mapping that came stock with your engine..

Found some vids of 318's with free flows. Dont sound great, but better than stock. But cant really justify the cost.

Sounds really cool, but alot of Moola for something like that. How much would a free flow be? Average price?

You would probably be looking at around R5k for an exhaust, would it be worth it, I doubt it, small engines need to be kept quiet.

And as has been said, rather spend your money on keeping the car in good nick and fixing any issues that it might have or develop in the future as it will help when the time comes to sell.

I agree with the peoples above.

but it would be advisable to decat the exhaust. then perhaps change the box or put in a straight pipe. will make a difference to the sound of the exhaust without having to fork out alot of money.

performance wise, i think that you cant really do much more. youd be spending much more money on the car than the increase in power you might gain. bad trade off in my opinion.

Decat with Strait pipe on a 318i makes no difference.. I did mine the other day
