Travelling to Namibia

Guys, been trying to get info on crossing the border at Vioolsdrift into Nam for my planned trip in September. Do i need police clearance for my X5 when crossing the border or not as some web sites mention police clearance documents and others say nothing about it? Who has crossed the border into Nam recently that can help me out here, please? Going there for a wedding and should be there for about seven days. Thanks again!

Hey man, I went over December 2013, and they were chilled. Just make sure you have an NA sticker/magnet and that your driver's licence is up to date and all those small admin items are taken care of. Maybe just take your car's reg docs with just incase. We didn't need any police clearance as far as I can remember.

Police clearance was never required unless they change the rules. As Eon said make sure you have the NA sticker (namibian side very fussy regarding this) the car registration docs etc.

It depends on who you get checking at the border post.
Rather just take as much info with as you can, better than ending up with problems.

take a certified copy of reg doc's, a copy of insurance clearance to state that you covered cross border, lastly make sure that licence is up to date on the vehicle

make sure you take out third party insurance at the border, god forbid something were to happen

theres no need for police clearance

all should be good to go

You need to have the registration documents, proof of insurance and your drivers license, ZA sticker on vehicle.

If still owe the bank, you need to have a letter from the bank giving you permission to drive the vehicle across the border into Nam, you also need proof of insurance, license and ZA sticker.

I am assuming the vehicle belongs to you, if not, you also need a letter from the registered owner giving you permission to take the vehicle out of the country.

Enjoy your trip, beautiful country. Don't drive at night due to animals on the road, esp north of Windhoek.

As wtrlan said above, be very careful when driving at night or rather avoid it if you can.

Also, stick to the speed limit!
The speed traps do not have much of a leeway (5km/h) so if you are traveling at more than 125km/h in a 120 zone you get a steep fine (expect upwards of R500) - which has to be payed immediately to the officer or at the main town of the district which can cause unnecessary delays to your trip.
If you drive fast enough they can lock you up on the spot and only let you go until you can get a court date.

Thanks again for the response! The car is mine and is paid up. Also, i make a point of sticking to the 120 speed limit (125 on my speedo) so i should not have a problem with fines except if they trap me when i am passing some one. I will be sleeping over on the Namib side of the Vioolsdrift border gate but due to time limits i will probably have to travel from about 6 in the morning to about 8 at night (going to other side of Gobabis near the Botswana border). Really looking forward to this trip! Put new tires on as well as having a Unichip put in (about 187kw and 567Nm) so am anxious to see what mileage i can get on a tank. Last long trip from Upington via Three Sisters i got 12,7km/l tank to tank, so hope to better that.:=):

Wow that's quite far hey! I suppose you can 'make up some time' before 8am in the morning, before they start trapping.
