Transmission light - need help/info

Hello gents.

I feel like throwing a hissy fit & piss all over Bosch.

I took my car in the day before yesterday to get the outside temp sensor replaced (the second hadn dealer paid for this). This was after they ordered the sensor the previous Wednesday. So they phoned me & said no that got the wrong sensor from BMW. The next day (yesterday) I took the car back, they phone again telling me they actually had the right sensor the first time, so I just left the car there last night.

Got it @ 1, & told the woman I'm just going to go through the car & check what they broke, since you usually get your car back with more stuff broken than what they fixed.

Now my issue. I drove of then saw the transmission error light, can't stop cause I'm in the middle of traffic so I drove for a few km's untill I got a spot to stop. While the light is on, I can't use the steptronic & the car is dead as in like a :floggin: I switched the car of turn on & it's gone. Everything works, the car pulls lie a train, no issues.

I've attached the error I got. (can't see whether the file is attached so here's photostand aswell.)

I phoned the second hand car dealer where I bought it from & he said the car did that & he took it in to get it fixed. According to him, it's not the gearbox it's the airflow meter thats hay-wire. :mmm: He said he'll phone the place that worked on the car & he'll phone me back.

Is this something I should be worried about?

MAF Mass airflow Meter. Yes, they do sometimes play havoc with the tranny. Don't ask how the two is linked, but if you get the problem every day, better change the MAF. Looking at R4k (not from the dealer though. You could attemp to clean it, but that seldom works cause that thing is VERY fragile. GL, hope you get it sorted out!

Thanks for the info Hellas.

I spoke to the dealership & they said they already had it replaced in this car & he said I should take it back to the workshop who replaced it. I phoned the place just to confirm & they said I can bring the car tomorrow morning. SIGH.

Anyway, atleast I'm not paying, nor my warranty, so I guess it's not all bad.

EDIT: Oh & this was the very first time it happened to me, but the previosu owners had the problem & I've been driving the car for 8 days now.

Naw that was just for the discomfort of having to deal with idiots and being without your baby for the day or longer, even if your not paying for it

Lets hope its only the MAF..

Well, I told him, whatever it is, I'm not paying neither the warranty I paid for. This is the way I got the car from them & they said it's 100% mechanically sound. If they don't pay they will have the biggest shit storm up their valley they've ever encountered. EVER.

Yeah, the Bosch botch up was pretty frustrating, but getting mad will only make things worst & I'm pretty considerate, but the transmission thing right after they worked on the car is getting to me. I don't need the car right now as I've got a few options when it comes to transport atm, but from next year onwards it'll be quite difficult if my car needs some work done while I have to work.

I hear you man. It's fixable, someone else is going to pay for it, but the inconvenience of being without your car for a while is the killer.

I just waited 3 weeks for the BMW, my wife was driving my GTI, and I had to loan cars from my folks, the office etc. I was planning on buying a 3rd car as a toy, or back-up, but after the rebuild, my money pit has dried up significantly, so that plan flew out the window.

Eish. This morning when I came of the N1 & stopped at the robot on the slip way, the traction control lit up aswell as the yellow break light, the same one as the red handbreak light. The break pad light also came on.

Whats the chances that one week after I bought the car all this crap starts. SIGH.

Gee hulle gas boet. Maybe pop into BMW to check the fault codes. Sure they will give you a print out. Take that along as ammunition.

OK, so yesterday was pretty eventful. I went to the mechanic & he told me there's absolutely nothing wrong with the MAF. Some of the errors I got might have been due to low voltage (according to the computers from the BMW place), aka kak battery, the one I had in was like the size of a matchbox & some no name brand.

So I phoned the place where I bought the car & they said I should come by this morning to get a replacement. I said only Willard or Raylight will do, this was a suggestion from the BMW mechanic. The info I got from Willards site said I should get a 658/668 or a 652. Got to Speedy this morning & they only had a 654, it fits like a glove & they said it would be A ok in my car. So all & all I got a battery worth R1150. Hopefully this was the cause of the problems.

While I was @ the place where I bought the car I asked for interest sake what oil they put in the car when they serviced it & I got some Shell Helix Ultra. The BMW mechanic recommended this, so I'm all :) Just to confirm this, there was a stack off these oil bottles, so I'm pretty convinced after he gave me a good explanation of what oild they use for the different engines etc.

Shell Helix Ultra??? WTF???

The BMW recommended oil for the M54 is Castrol SLX 5W30.
I use Liqui Moly 5W30

Both the mechanic & the place where I bought the car said fully synthetic is the way to go. The mechanic said they use Liqui Moly when they service their customers cars, but he personally use Shell Helix Ultra for his cars. :dunno:

The mechie said whatever I do, just don't use Castrol, no matter what. He said it causes sludging.

Maybe Mike can help out here?
