Who has had one fitted - Talk to me about them!

• Affect my motorplan if aftermarket?
• Would the bumper need to be cut?

etc etc etc

You really don't want the aftermarket type that I ended up with. OEM is soo much more expensive, and I would recommend that route.

In my case, All looked ok (besides the cut of course), until I removed the diff. The TB was in the way and I had to remove it to get the diff out. The installers drilled 4 12mm holes in different positions in the boot compartment. To say the least - I am not impressed. I removed it permanently. So If you need a crappy towbar - I have one for you, or it goes to scrap metal. Will try to post some pics of what the issue is, but here is a taster:

Try these guys, they never cut into your bumper, have been using them for years now and many of my friends have made use of them, because they do not cut into your bumper. If they do not have one for your car they will build you one.

Their prices are also very competitive.

AutoBar did this fitment initially. I paid +/- R1500 in 2005 and the bumper was cut by them. Being a noob BMW owner back then, I did not ask too many questions. Recently I had a slight rear impact and BMW Voortrekker authorized repair shop just cut the bumper in this way upon replacement - too far from the TB. :argh: Perhaps Autobar changed their TB and there is no need to cut anymore...Always make sure before you have it fitted, and how it is bolted to the car.

I can suggest retrofit, get the parts from an accident damaged car, however its a mission because you need to remove the whole rear bumper. I haven't done it but I have seen the manuals on how to do it. But keep in mind ts probably easier to get an aftermarket and it wont affect motorplan because it's cosmetic but you can always confirm with the dealer.

My suggestion would be to get the 'Jeep Connection' type. My Brother In Law had it fitted to his 2011 320d when he bought it< I seem to recall the price being around R5k at the dealers. The hitch can be removed when the towbar is not being used and there was no cutting involved.

The Jeep Connection also plugs into the exsisting harnass of the car, so your ECU knows when you are towing and adjusts accordingly. He uses his car to tow his Penta Caravan, and it really is a pleasure, no hastles.

You can also buy the 'Goose Neck' type from the dealership, but they are more expensive, around R9k. My Father in Law had a aftermarket one fitted for R3.5k also with no cutting to his 2007 325i with Sport kit.
