TIP Going out of Motor Plan

I have a tip for those of you that like me have a 5 year old BMW and are facing the inevitable Motor Plan cancelation.

My 2007 530d when out of plan today so what I did was to take it to the AA over the weekend for a full mechanical check up. The test cost me R550 in Centurion.

What the test showed is that there were small cracks in the lower suspension mountings and that all the brake disc had ridges and needed replacement or skimming. They also found that the car was pulling to the left and suggested a wheel alignment.

I took the report to Sandton BMW. They had no problem fixing all the defects. These include replacement of the frond brake discs, the left and right lower suspension arms and more. The invoice came to just under R18 000.00.

So now I know my baby is in perfect nick and it save me paying for repairs later in the cars life.

The one trick you missed is to tell them the car lurches in first gear and every now and then it also give a little kick. This would have got you a megatronic replacement (R20k) and probably a gearbox recon (another R20k). BTW this is a very very very common issue with these cars. My 525's megatronic and gearbox went pop at 5.5 years and 110k km.....

Well, my MP expires end April and I would love to have it propperly checked out, but scared that BMW will just wipe their asses and do nothing.

Problem is, the closest Dekra to me is in Vereeniging (140km).

Should we start a thread on this subject listing items to be checked before MP expiry??

How I wish I did exactly this when my car's motorplan expired, I could have had a field day with BMW, now too late and water under the bridge...;(

Thinking towards, decat and propper software.

Apparently 325 and 330 is the same engine. They only restricted the 325's intake. Saw some posts on e90posts where they put the 330's intake one the 325 with software and end up making same power as std 330.

BMW wants R14k for the motorplan extension..... :nonono:

Rather put that towards the decat and software :joy:

Only on the US E90 IIRC.

Also, the local 1 series coupe (125i was 3.0l)

I could be wrong though.

Ek het MP extend vir 20 000 teen 22k... Maar gaan beslis seker maak hulle sort enige iets uit voor die 20k km klaar is :)

As Sank would say "there is no replacement for displacement", however, the software AND tuning makes a huge difference.:thumbs:

I've always wondered why they never came out with a 130i coupe...... yes yes 135 teh awesome bla bla bla bla bla

Yep, BMW model "numbers" seldom actually relate to engine capacity - the 3.0i engine is used an many models and badged as 325i, 328i and or course 330i. As far as I know, the 125i locally does use the detuned 3.0i engine. The new 6 Series, when you see the 640i badge you think, maybe 4.0i V8, but instead it is a 3.0i I6 twin turbo (335i)...

The 125i is running a 3.0l motor. You can even hear the deep exhaust tone. They merely detuned the motor and because the 1 series coupe is lighter than the 3 series, the power to weight ratio remains the same.

I've extended my motorplan which ends, end of April 2012. Cost me R4k, cos my car only has 58000 km. I'll extend again next year, and the car probably wont even be close to 70 000km then. :nonono:

Your suggestion is sound and if there were any problems with the box I would have mentioned it. You see there are still honest people out there and I am one of them so I will not fabricate faults.
The suggestion to open a thread for things to check before going out of plan is great. How do we do that?

I had no problems with BMW in this regard. Keep in mind that the Workshop gets paid by BMW motor plan so if they can justify the work they will happily do it.

The suggestion to open a thread for things to check before going out of plan is great. How do we do that?
