The Machine to Rule Them All

So after many years I decided it was time to update my machine and this time I wanted to go for OVERKILL, something that was way over the top in the areas I wanted it to be, so lets try not kill me for what I have decided.

Motherboard: Asus Sabertooth X79

Processor: Intel i7-3820 (probably overclocked to >4GHz)

CPU Cooler: Corsair H80 sealed liquid cooling system

Memory: G.Skill RipjawsZ CL8 1600MHz 4x4GB

Storage: 2x 120GB OCZ Vertex 3 SSD's in RAID-0 (OS+Games) with some 2TB HDD for everything else

Case and Power: Coolermaster Silent Pro Gold 800W in a Coolermaster Silencio 550

And that's what i'm aiming for... I left off the graphics card because i'm going to get that last so i'm sure i'll change my mind. Probably a GTX 560ti,570 or 580.

sounds decent enough. those SSD's are gona make all the difference! id LOVE one of them:inlove: my brother has a similar spec pc, he used to overclock with dry ice and liquid nitrogen. very nice CPUs!

Haha, thanks guys, I've actually been getting a ton of flak from friends and co-workers about the SSD's and even more about striping them but with USB 3 coming out I don't think it's that unreasonable. i mean USB3 is +-600 MB/s and from videos i've seen about 800 MB/s on the SSD's compared to about 100 MB/s on a normal hard drive. I can't wait to see what the loading times are going to be like, i'm sure there will be no more of this ---> :bangdesk:

Rather go for the H100 cooling system, only about R100 - R200 more than the H80, and it wokds much better.

Whatever you do, dont get a cheap GPU, its makes so much difference. I am running SLi GTX580, its crazy. get 200 FPS on BF3.

It's sad that the 1TB internal HDDs are in short supply due to the floodings in Thailand a year or two back  Prices for a 1TB used to be like R500 :bawling:

Here is what I'd get:

Cpu: i7 3820 (although you could opt for a 2600 as well as you'll hardly notice a difference in speed. The other stuff is what's gonna make the difference. Even a i5 2500k would be MORE than enough)

Gpu: I'd go for the Radeon 7970 (Grew up using only geforce cards. Switched about 2 years ago and loving every moment) But if you WANT nvidia -> 590/680.

Motherboard: Asus P8Z68 V-pro is more than enough already

Ram: 8gb in either G.skill sniper 1600mhz or Mushkin 1600mhz (Try to get a CL below 9 and make sure it's 1,5v) - this is more than enough ram

Case: I'd go for the Nzxt Phantom or the Coolermaster Haf X - Both brilliant

SSD: Corsair Force GT 240gb is the one you want!

HD's: Just make sure you get a Sata 6gb/s HD with higher rpm. Sometimes it's better to get 2x 1gb than a 2gb. - I'd go for Seagate any day of the week.

PSU: Very important and often overlooked. I'd go for the Corsair AX 850 or the TX 850 - That's it

CPu Cooler - The hyper 212 is a pretty good cooler! The Corsair H100 is also very good.

That's what I would do. This will already be overkill for pretty much anything and you can save on ram and motherboard and even cpu so you can get better GPU - which will make a bigger difference. Get the lowest CL 1600mhz ram you can get and seriously consider that SSD.

Hope this helps...

Enjoy!

SSD really is what you want. as calypso said, its the way of the future. my brothers windows loads in no time flat! the little windows logo hardly pops up!

whats ur motivation behind the two in raid? why not get just one and rather go a bit bigger? seriously doubt that they will pack up anytime soon.

I got given the case but the H100 doesn't fit, it was going to be my first option but the H80 isn't far behind and more than enough for now.

I hear prices should be moving back to normal soon, or at least much better, I'm buying the things that won't depreciate as fast first so the mobo/cpu and then gfx card, hdd's, ssd's last. As far as I can tell those are the worst.

I settled on the 120GB because it looks like the best gig/rand ratio and it also helps since RAID-0 is kinda like double the speed, no penalty on capacity, double the failure rate. Now I don't mind double failure rate if its only my OS and games. IMHO much better for me

Thanks for the tips!

I had to go with a X79 board since the i7-3820 won't fit onto a Z68 and the only reason i'm going with 16gig of ram is that the stuff is SOOOO cheap at the moment, and you never know if that might change, I mean we all know what happened to the hard drive market :fencelook:

Nice machine. I was going to upgrade to X79 and a 3930k this year but the money I had for it I used towards the 328i.

Maybe when the 325i gets sold.
