That Cat Pee Smell...........

Ok so have experienced this many times with my other Beamers as well, use the aircon and after change to normal ram air and there comes that cat pee smell through the vents.

I then use an anti bacterial spray and spray into the vents with the heater full on, this is supposed to kill off all the bacteria and change the smell ……….. unfortunately it is so overbearing after using this spray that you have like sinus for a week after, like hanging those crap little "smellies" from your rearview mirror.

Anyone experienced this same dilemma with better outcomes, it's like the notorious left passenger door "sticky door handle" on the X5's {luckily not all} …..

Occasionally I drop some cannabis leaves on the exhaust manifold,
helps alot with everything including cat pee, money worries, misfiring engines etc...

.sorry.

I think the cat pee is moisture in the air ducts that becomes stagnant.

This smell is from bacteria growth on the heat exchanger core. Basically if you switch on and off the warmth and moisture allows the bacteria to grow. The treatments you get should be to rinse the core and kill the bacteria from the exchanger fins. Air passes over the fins to heat or cool on its way into the air ducts in the car.

Best is to not switch the aircon off, and uses the climate control temp setting. You will find the newer cars dont even come with an aircon button any more (always on).

Yeah I think Dragonman is on to something.

On all my cars, the AC is left turned on 24/7/365. I like a temp of 21 to 21.5 in the car, and the climate control then either heat or cool depending on what is needed to get to 21-21.5c.

Ive only had this smell when the AC is not used permanently.

I got the same thing with M135i...and I cannot even find the clean air intake to spray anything into it.

I used ACOT500, which sorted out my audi before but this one just has this smell returning all the time. I bit messed up to be honest.

Ozone generator for 30min in with car recirculating air on full. Then let it stand for an hour or 2. Then pull car in sun and ventilate. Takes roughly 3 days for the little bit of ozone oudur to dissapear.

I have experience in this for my previous owner was a heavy smoker and that was the only way to get rid of the smell. I built my own little cheap generator and I have done a few friends and family cars with stinky aircon and it works wonders. Since I built this little cheap generator it saves me from buying antibacterial sprays whenever the aircon gets smelly again in any of our cars and it works better than the sprays.

You can go google it. Just a caution when working with the ozone generator. Dont breathe ozone clean when using the machine. Ozone dispates completely in about 1 to 2 hours depending on conditions. Small quantities wont harm you.
