Tacky door panel

A mate of mine has an older E46. He was showing me today that the top of the door panel where he always rests his arm has lost it's texture slightly. That's not the problem, the problem is that the area is slightly tacky and it gets dirty very quickly. I asked him why he does not just clean it and he says that it becomes worse, more sticky if he does that. I've never seen this before. Anyone got any ideas....is there a coating or something that one can apply?

I have the same problem with the driver door handle grip. The dealer (of all places...) scrubbecit to get it clean and in the process removed the protective film. Yes, it gets more sticky/tacky. Dash cleaner or even leather products dont work. I'll be interested in some advice too!

Hey DonovanPorter,

I called this friend of mine that has this problem and he said that it gets much worse when it is wet. (But then I assume you know that.) It's crazy.

I have the same thing on mine, wrt the rain, it almost looks like it makes the trim melt where the drops land. I just thought my car was allergic to rain... :mmm:

I called a friend that has owned and run a Automotive Plastic Repair Company. He suggested taking a cloth and some thinners and giving the area a a very quick wipe and see if that works. He is not a cowboy, he knows his business very well. Anyone want to give that a try? :mmm:
