As mentioned before, I recently bought a 1999 e39 740i. It has the scratches etc expected of an old car, but generally in great nick.
But...
I didn't notice it during my test drive, but when the gearbox starts getting warm, it only shifts at very high revs and you need to drive it in manual. A complete pain in the ar$e and it guzzles fuel even worse.
After speaking to a lot of so-called and self-styled BMW and gearbox specialists and getting a lot of different types of advice, I just happened to see ZF's board here. And I thought, you twit, you should've gone straight to them. So I did.
I won't bore you with the long story of how the fault was finally traced and corrected, but I have to say this: The service and openness and kindness and professionalism I experienced from Nico and Hardus makes me hopeful for a better world.
They are both younger than me - Hardus is actually still a laaitie - but they have a work ethic and product knowledge that impresses the biggest skeptic - me!
I finally took a test drive on the Friday of the long weekend at 19:30 and when I came back, a very happy customer, the two of them were mopping the floor of the work bay.
