Steering wobble - between 110 - 125km/h e39 530i

Hi guys,

I recently changed my wheels from 17" style 66's with 235/45 all round, to style 95"s 19" 245/35 f 265/30 r,

I am getting quite a serious wobble through the steering wheel cruising between 110-125km/h
The worst is at 120, is it is worse when crossing and better when accelerating right through that speeds,

I got the wheels balanced as well as my alignment done when I put the wheels on, so unless something was not done right there, then what else could it be?

Do they need to be high speed balanced or something like that, or any other suggestions?

The wheels were bored out from 72.5 center bore to e39 spec 74.1, this seems to have been done fine though so I doubt it could be that could it?

Thanks

Wild guess here. The symptoms you describe sounds like suspension wear. Your front lower control arm bushes may be past their due date. E39s are known to wear out their suspension bushes. Going to 19" wheels could have exacerbated this.

I once heard that the Aussies copied the E39 quite closely when they designed the suspension for the Chev Lumina. As a result, the Chevy suffers from the same wear problems. Serves them right (evil chuckle).

Hi,
Thanks for your reply,

The previous owner mentioned that he changed the lower control arms about a year ago, so I doubt it could be that unfortunately:(
Though like you mentioned the new wheels could have made things worse

Put old wheels back and see if it still does it.

Do this so that you can see if it is the new wheels, or something in the suspension. I would have the wheels rebalanced as another option.

Don't know about the E39, but on the E34 I had a similar wobble at 90 and on those cars it is almost always lower and thrust arm bushings wear. But your first step is to make sure your wheels are balanced.

Yep, first eliminate the wheels since you know it was worked on.
