Steering rack replacement

Hi, I am new to BMW, I took my 118i for a service(not at the agents though) the mechanic contacted me to inform there are some problem with my steering rack, he took it to BMW for inspection said the steering rack is bend and need to be replaced( is this a common thing or how do you know), I bought the part, really expensive R8500, after everything I cant feel any difference in the steering or driving handling. BMW bought the core back from me, this happened last week. Would BMW be able to check if the rack was ever really bend/damaged and needed replacement. R10000 later I am not convinced it was ever needed to be replaced (kinda upset to spend this kind of money if not needed), although my steering wheel is stiff, but exactly the same a before the replacement, is this normal? Anyone Thanks?

Hmmm, if there was an issue you would have noted it before it went for service. Upon receiving your car you state it is the same, sounds fishie!

Maybe take the rack to a different BMW dealer and ask them to give you a diag on it, don't give them any info just ask them to do a check.

Firstly, check your tyres. If the rack was bent for any length of time, there should be uneven wear. Depending on the place, a bend may not feel odd, if the hydraulics are not affected, but there should have been a pull/drift when you let go while travelling. As to the cost, ja well, stealers. Got the same deal offered to me on an E36 rack, eventually cost me R2k to rebuild the old one.:sorry::fishwack:
