Steering Guibo

Just wanted to know if anyone has ever changed their steering guibo/coupler, if yes, has it made a noticeable difference?
It seems to be quite common on the International forums.

In general, or specifically for the E46 M3?

Some time back my father in law was complaining about some play in the steering of his E46 328i. Now on this car you can see the knuckle and coupler from within the engine bay and from what we could see, there was no play at that point. He was then thinking it could be the steering rack or tie-rod ends. It turned out to be a failed main ball joint on the left lower control arm! Never seen a ball joint fail like that, and he is so lucky that it did not fall apart while driving! Not sure why he did not spot it since he did have the car up on his ramps a number of times, maybe just never considered a problem there since he had replaced the lower control arms and bushes not too long ago at the time.

To be honest, I am not too sure to what extent these knuckle couplers wear or fail for that matter, from what I've heard in the past, they are generally pretty tough and usually components closer to the wheels wear out first...

In general.

Thanks for that response, with suspenison/steering components I guess it could be a variety, one just needs to have it checked properly.

I'm assuming this is for your m3 so things might be different. But its still e46.

I had play in my steering wheel. And thought it was the guibo thing. Anyway took it to my mech and there was no play coming from the steering column. But there was play in the tie rods. I've replaced the tie rods but havent tested it as my car is undergoing surgery.

AFAIK the states have a different steering column to us which is possibly why there is alot of them recorded over there. I think we got #3 and they got #1.

What is interesting is the part changes from 11/03 anyone know what the difference is?

On my 320d I changed part no 4. Can't say that it made a difference, maybe in my mind, but the part was not worn really as it is not the rubber disc type that you get on other models. More like a refined universal coupler.

Yip I think the ones from the states have the rubber disc one. I priced no.4 at the agents. As I read loads of us forums saying they had play in their steering and changed the guibo and it helped. They wanted R1400 for the part. Then I had my mech inspect it and there was no play in no.4 and loads in the tierods
