Hi All,
I would just like to give a special thanks to Nico from ZF gearboxes up hear in Gauteng. What an awesome chap he is. Very accommodating and willing to assist - something very rare these days.
I have been having a strange issue wrt the gearbox on my e60 in the last month, since the colder weather came to visit really. When first starting the car if you try drive off immediately it seemed to hunt in the gearbox between 1/2/p... and was very irratic until driven for a couple of km's. I got round this by letting the car warm up after starting for around 5 minutes before driving. There were no symptoms of oil leaks or anything like that. I popped through this morning after chatting to Nico and he quickly put the car on the lift to check, could not see anything, ran a full diagnostic and checked the readings which are all within spec on the box. The car now has 165k km's and its never had a gearbox oil change that I'm aware of.
He then said he would like to check the oil level which he found to be low so topped it up with around 1.5l and was so kind as to not charge for this either! He is not sure if that is the actual problem but suggested seeing what happens in the morning, which I will duly do.
What he did mention is that the fluid colour is more red than the light golden colour of their oil, so it may be that the oil is not of the 100% spec so with the cold it could be heavy until warmed up. I will definitely take the car there for a proper oil change in due course but I would just like to say thanks once again and recommend them to anybody who is thinking of having an oil change or auto box related queries in the Gauteng region.
Thanks Nico ......
