I honestly wouldn't buy that. I was also looking at one of those when I was first looking for a HT system, but they're only good for making a loud noise. For the same money you can get a better quality system from the likes of Yamaha, Onkyo, Denon etc. Don't be fooled by the size and power ratings of those systems. They're much more balanced than the sony's which just use heavy bass to impress.

Or better yet you can build an awesome system over time. You could buy a decent amp and maybe 2 front speakers first and build the rest as your budget allows. Much more rewarding imo.

Then the Sony is not for you. I always find it amusing when the Salesmen at places like Game and Dion demo these types of systems to customers. They put the volume up so loud that every bone in your body rattles and then tell the customers how much power the system pushes out but you can't even hear the midrange and high notes of what's being played:roflol: And the customers find themselves impressed by it:roflol: Go to some proper AV stores, tell them what your budget is and let them recommend a few systems for you. Don't rush into it though or you'll find yourself unhappy with it 2months down the line. The other thing I would recommend is that you demo lot's of systems within your price range. If possible some AV stores can arrange a home demo for you so you know how it sounds in your environment. Remember that it will never sound the same as when you demo at the shop as there are a lot of external factors that influence how your system sounds. i.e adjusting your speakers by millimeters can make a huge difference.

I've got an Onkyo Amp with Jamo speakers, I'm happy with it although I feel I could've rather built up a better system over time instead of being in a hurry to buy a full system there and then.

Also don't discount second hand equipment. You can pick up awesome bargains in the second hand market.

I have heard those Jamo speakers with a Marantz AV and the sound was WOW, clarity was unreal, the price was R25K.

Thanks for the advice man!

You get them at various price ranges and models. If I were you, lets say you have a budget of 8k for a system. I would spend that 8k just on a decent amp and then save towards decent speakers later.

I regret not doing that. I budgeted 15k 2 years ago and spent my whole budget on a complete system when I could've gotten a better amp and better front speakers for that price and saved towards better rears, center and sub. Of course the advantage when buying a complete system is that you get a bigger discount.

anything more than 6.1 is overkill, I dont even know where the 7th speaker would be?

I have 5.1 sony system on a yamaha amp ,while it is fine I regret not saving and buying better speakers...

You can use the 6th and 7th channels on the amp to bi-amp your front speakers in a 5.1 or 5.2 setup which is what I did. My amp is a 7.1 channel, but I have 5 speakers and using all 7 channels. What this does is it runs your bass and mid-range off separate channels on your front speakers.

I would also say rather pay more and get a setup with reference grade stuff ... but its going to cost more ...

Yamaha, Marantz or Denon AV receiver and some nice speakers B&W, Jamo, Quad etc ...

I agree with these guys.

These Sony systems with all the speakers will just give you a booming sound.

I think you are looking for something that will give you great clarity and the right amount of bases when you need it.

I have a NAD system just an Amp and two front speakers. It’s a great system.

Get a good amp and front speakers to start to start like the guys are saying. The good thing about a systems like NAD, Marantz, Yamaha etc is that you can trade the system in for new technology at most AV stores.

What's your budget by the way? Maybe if you have a figure in mind we can recommend something for you... I always say with AV equipment, come up with a budget first, then tripple it:rollsmile::roflol:

Also remember with high end equipment, especially speakers, they tend to hold their value quite well and if you not happy you can easily get most of your money back.

Forgot to mention that what a lot of guys do is they buy a decent amp and their 2 rear speakers first, but use them as front speakers until they save up for decent front speakers.

Sound for your home is like a drug.

If it were not for my theatre I would most certainly be driving a M3 by now heheh

But anyway yea stay away from the sony crap.

Rather start small and get yourself a set of bookshelf speakers and a small amp to start out with. I started out like this and was absolutely amazed what amount of sound quality, loundess and overall experience you can get out of 2 decent speakers.

I started with a yamaha amp and a set of B&W 685 Bookshelf speakers about 5 years ago and now have a full Kilpsch, B&W and Rotel 7.2 system at home and i would never ever look back on going this route thenr ather buying the name brand LG's and Sony systems.

I agree if you want quality sound you should avoid Sony.I've currently got a Onkyo 7.1 Amp and its the best amp I've ever owned. Before that I had a Harman Kardon.Build your system in stages, its important to have a quality Amp for quality sound and then save up for the accompanying speakers.I disagree that anything bigger then 5.1 is a waste.I've owned plenty surround systems and my current 7.1 system exceeded my expectation and I feel like I've finally got true surround sound. If you on a tight budget Gumtree will be your friend, there's a lot of practically new Equipment on offer.

Have a look at this website:
http://www.audicoonline.co.za

Here are a few options that I would recommend.

AV Receivers:
I have the model that precedes this. Onkyo are one of the best in my opinion. AT the time when I bought mine, there was nothing that could match it.
http://www.audicoonline.co.za/Electronics/Home-Theatre-Amplifiers/Onkyo-TX-NR515

If you want to spend a little more, the 6 series is also very good and is what I would get if I were buying now:
http://www.audicoonline.co.za/Elect...kyo-TX-NR616-7-2-Channel-Network-A-V-Receiver

I can't comment on Marantz or Denon, but I know the Marants pairs up very well with Monitor Audio and B&W speakers.
http://www.audicoonline.co.za/Electronics/Home-Theatre-Amplifiers/Marantz-NR1603

http://www.audicoonline.co.za/Electronics/Home-Theatre-Amplifiers/Denon-AVR1713

Speakers:

If you build your system up over time I would recommend these to start off with:

I have a set of these that I'm using in my Hi-Fi set up and they're awesome. The bass from these speakers is phenomenal. I think they even received a 5 star rating. You could upgrade these to floor standers at a later stage and use them as your rear speakers.
http://www.audicoonline.co.za/speakers/bookshelf_speakers/Monitor-Audio-Bronze-BX2

Again if you want to spend a little more you can look at the Silver range.
http://www.audicoonline.co.za/speakers/bookshelf_speakers/Monitor-Audio-Silver-RX2

B&W's are also highly recommended although a bit more expensive:
http://www.audicoonline.co.za/speakers/bookshelf_speakers/Bowers-and-Wilkins-686

http://www.audicoonline.co.za/speakers/bookshelf_speakers/Bowers-and-Wilkins-685

Have a look at the speaker packages available as well if you want to buy everything in 1 go, but then be prepared to double, if not tripple your budget:rollsmile: Remember the prices on the website are not cast in stone. If you go into an AV shop, 99% of the time they offer discounts on the advertised prices.

+1:rollsmile: It's addictive. I could've also been driving an E46 M3 had I not built up my theater room:rollsmile:

Hey Bavs.

I have been contemplating the Monitors Audio BX2s for a while now. How are they and have you bought from Audico before?

I intend using them in my stereo setup (so difficult to get good stereo from an AV amplifier without spending a packet) which is a small Cambrige Audio 30W RMS stereo amp.

I haven't bought from them before. I got my BX2's from a local AV store about 6months ago. I think I paid about R2800 for them. They pretty awesome speakers and they look good too. I have them running off an old NAD 3020e amp which pushes out 20wpc that I picked up on gumtree. They sound very balanced and the bass is very good, so much so that you don't need a sub. My initial plan was to upgrade the amp to a newer model or get a Marantz or Cambridge Audio amp, but I've put that on hold for now as I hardly had time lately to listen to my current setup.

Sweet! Thanks bud.

Damn. My apologies Yuvan. I just realized I jacked your thread.

Regarding the Sony.....if you looking clarity I wouldn't recommend. If you after volumes and bass I'd say yes!

All boils down to personal preference though. Best to listen to your ear. (Pun intended)
