Smothering sensation on 320d

Hi guys my e46 320d has a type of smothering sensation (lol) dont know how else to explain it but I had it by the stealers and they told me that they put it on the comp and had alot of errors and they cleared them all

And that he feels my cats are busy blocking up and he had two suggestions either I leave it by him and they remove them and clean it or I remove it permanently he says they will cost about 17k a piece and there's 2 of them

Now the problem is when you drive and you wana accelerate it feels if it smothers somehow but you can still hear the turbo trying to spool but its not all the time its an intermediate problem

Hoping you guys have any ideas for me.

What's the mileage on your car, I say remove them, and for a lot cheaper that the price the dealer quoted.

Go to the recommended exhaust shop in your area and have them remove the cats.

Either way cannot make the problem worse, also what errors did the dealers clear?

Sorry I thought I replied to this. No one will be able to say for certain over the internet. So if the dealers diagnosis is correct then yes it will solve your problem. Even if its wrong removing the cats will benifit the car. The turbo will last longer and run better.

they must be doing a lot of work to justify that amount of money, possibly a turbo replacement included in that quote.

usually removing the CATS on the manifold would barely cost you around R1000 to R1500 depeding on the labor time, maybe even less.

removing the manifold, cutting open the CAT, removing the blocked internal stuff, re-welding the empty shell of a CAT, replacing manifold, no software as the original piping and sensors remain in place, would be around R400-R500 per CAT

200 ts they didnt say what errors they but I did ask specifically because my maf sensor was very dirty and I cleaned it

So I thought that would be the problem but they said there where alot of errors that they cleared but that helps me much

Hi ralf yes the guy said out of the top of his head it will cost 17k each and he will charge me about 1000 to clean the old one but there was no official quote

But it will be interesting to find out by other dealers what they charge

The only downside I heard when taking out the cats is that u get that diesel smell back

Ok I went through a few forums and realised that they call it a flat spot caused by a few things which im gona check this weekend

And on another note I parked my car next to my father in law x3 2.0d and just idling my car exhaust pumps out more exhaust gas than his so for now ill eliminate the cat from my problem solving and focus on something else

Sorry for the thread revival... have issues with smothering to... If you decat is it a must for remap? Have terrible flat spots and tried nearly everything including carbon cleaning. Pls help.

hi as far as I know its not needed for a remap unless there are sensors connected to it

too add I fixed my smothering problem it was my egr vacuum advance leaking air through the diaphragm so I just blanked off the vacuum pipes
