Hi Guys

I have been using Castrol edge sport 10w 60 since my car has been out of motor plan(92k on clock, 2007). The car is almost at 160k km now so should i be looking for a high millage oil or something or must i stick with 10w 60. Also is there any other oil you guys recommened insted of Castrol as i want to do the service in the next two weeks.

Lol i just checked online(liqui moly) and yes they recommened 5w30/40. An ex mec of Bmw told us that 10w60 would be a good oil for the car so we have been using it since. Should i change to it now:dunno:

I think mini mike will be the right person to talk to. My car has over 220k on the clock and I've stuck to the 5w30/40, one guy who works with me has opted for the "high milage" oil (I refer to it as taxi oil) and he has wrecked his car, tops up with 5l per month.

Stay with the current oil.

10W-60 is the wrong oil. However it is of high viscosity and therefore the tolerances within your engine will be twice that of a car running 5W30 for example.

Although it is the wrong oil - Switching to an oil that is thinner would be the end of your engine. Your rings would go etc etc because thinner oils usually contain a higher synthetic additive package which also contains superior properties such as cleaning, anti rust etc etc etc. There are so many variables to this.

With a thinner oil the oil will circulate quicker but will also penetrate more which causes issues as it tends to clean out while it is at it making the tolerances which with a 10W60 are fine completely unbearable.

If you changed to thinner you would end up with bearing noises, lifter noises etc etc and because the thinner oil has more synthetic properties it would require an engine flush which would further advance the tolerances.

So in short. its not ideal - But stick with the 10W60.

I would even suggest going for a Synthetic based 20W50 just for better economy and lower service costs but really... Why take the chance?

Mike in my e36 3.2 I am currently using 10W60 castrol edge sport. Would you suggest that I change out for 0W40 or a 5W40 fully synthetic?

If I am not mistaken 10W60 is the oil that BMW recommends for the M3, well for the e46 M3 at least

10W60 is the M3 oil for the E36. And E46.

Fully Synthetic and you want a race spec oil if possible.

Do not change your oil.

just to clear up some possible confusion from future searches that may happen, DO NOT put castrol edge SPORT 10W60 in e46 m3.

you CAN use castrol edge 10W60 (not sport), as this is just rebranded TWS
