Setting up my PS3 for Movies

Hi

Have my PS3 for roughly a year, played quite a few games and watched a few blu-ray movies. Now I'm not the most technical person out there...so please tell me how I would use my PS3 as a media device so that I can watch movies.

I have some series and movies on my external hard drive and would like to copy it to my ps3(320gb) and watch it off the PS3.

you download the software and use your pc as a media server..just make sure itshokked up via wirelss or ethernet cable...

once set up you can stream movies to your ps3!

and it even plays mkv files etc

there is a file setup you need to configure on your external Hdd... once this is done you plug the Hdd into the ps3 usb and you can watch and/or copy any thing you want to and from the ps3.... i will PM you the format when i get home

Can I copy movies from my external HD onto the PS3 HD and play directly from there to my TV. or do I have to have another PC hooked up?

You can do that, but copying takes forever and a day. With PS3 Media Server, it'll allow you to play mkv files. PS3 doesn't natively support mkv file formatting.

Thanks Jeff, think I'm starting to understand it now.

If I have some time tonight I'll post up a nice detailed walkthrough on getting yourself setup.
Do you have a wireless router at your place? Or you gonna run cables?

OK so here it goes :)

1. Install PS3 Media Server on your PC where all your media is

2. Make sure that you're PC is setup to stream video and share files over your network. The easiest is to setup a Homegroup on your main PC, and join the other PC's.
Check your settings under:
Control Panel > Network and Sharing Centre > Advanced Sharing Settings
Make sure that the following config's are applied:

  • Turn on network discovery
  • Turn on file or printer sharing
  • Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can read and write files in the Public folders
  • Choose media streaming options for computers and devices
    • Change this to Allow All on your Local network
  • User 128-bit encryption to help protect file sharing connections (recommended)
  • Turn off password protected sharing
  • Allow Windows to manage homegroup connections (recommended)

3. Go into the settings of your PS3 Media Server and setup the folders you want to use. This settings is under Navigation/ Sharing Settings.

4. Your PS3 should pickup the PS3 Media Server automatically, so if you've setup the media server with only 1 folder, it'll be there.

Hope that about covers it for you dude. Just remember, if you'll be streaming 720p or 1080p, the PC needs to encode the files first, so it'll use 100% of your CPU.
Lemme know if you need some more help.
