Servicing a E90 320D - Help Please.

Hey Guys!

The time has come for my BMWs first service and I would like to give it a go myself, at least as far as my knowledge will allow. I don't trust service centres all that much and try to avoid them... :fencelook:

I have had the car for about 4 months and the OBD shows 900km to the next service.

How do I check what the OBD wants to be serviced? I am having trouble entering the service menu and can't figure it out.

Either way, I also want to do the regular service for peace of mind. What is the necessities regarding a routine Diesel service?

- What spark plugs? (edit: No spark plugs... :sorry: )
- Which oil?
- Oil filter.
- fuel/diesel filter?
- Which air filter?

What else needs to be replaced with a Diesel?
If there is anyone willing to assist me with my questions I would appreciate it greatly!

most guys I know use Ross Duncan in Midrand, and they seem very happy with the service.

LOL Herco dude. Just read more about servicing your car online. If you don't have two left hands there is a fair bit you can accomplish diy, certainly an oil change, brakes, filters, wipers etc.
But take your car to a garage this time and watch closely...

My Diesel knowledge is very limited, thats why I asked which parts to service.

Usually I do everything myself, ive rebuilt my OPCs motor ect so im not a complete tool. :rollsmile:

For a first time, Id suggest, perhaps asking someone like Nikhil to do it for you, you watch him, and then you know how next time.

Its always a good thing to learn to do stuff yourself, I started out with the basics, like a minor service. Moved my way up from there. I do everything myself on my daily, sometimes I will read up on the Hyundai forums, if I want to make double sure of what I'm about to do.

I used to always service a friends car, one day I told him to put the beer down and watch. The next service after that I told him what to do, while I supervise. He is now able to do atleast a service himself.

Don't forget to use http://www.realoem.com/ for a detailed overview of your car's parts. Generally good to buy filters from the dealer as they come with new seals too. Oils - anything decent, Liqui Moly, Shell, etc.

So far I can see that on a Diesel you need to do the following for a 'basic' service:

Oil - 5w30 seems to be the recommended oil.
Oil filter - Preferably a BMW one.
Air Filter - BMW one.

That's all simple and easy enough to do. But what else needs to be done?

Fuel filter Cartridge? Is that necessary on a Diesel?

So On my 320d, I just buy the parts for each service and give it to the mech to fit. All for that little black stamp in the service book.

Anyway in doing some homework when the E90 came off plan, MANN is the OEM manufacturers of the oil and air filters. The distributor of MANN in South Africa is GUD.
So go to a stockist that sells GUD and get the oil and air filters. It is the same thing you would buy from BMW but repackaged and with a substantial saving.
It is a yellow box but big writing in green and yellow on the top quarter of the box says MANN.

The fuel filter you can actually use a generic, but your own preference. Sadly when I tried to get the GUD generic, it seems the same model for the pre-lci was listed for the LCI but when we tried to fit it, it was too short with a different fitting. So that I had to get from the agents. Yours being pre-lci will be fine with the generic. I have a mate with a pre-lci using it for about 20 000km now.

I usually change oil (6.5l of Helix Utra 5w40), oil filter and air filter every 10 000km and fuel filter every 30 000km.

Mechanically I haven't had any issues since the car came off motorplan 30 000km ago.

Unfortunately for me, I just walked out of BMW and payed R2000 for fuel, air and oil filter. This is how we learn. Atleast I know now that this service everything will be new and I can have peace of mind.

Surprisingly oil at BMW was not badly priced, I paid R590 for 7 litres of oil for my first service out of plan. It was 5w30 and made by Shell for BMW. They no longer use Castrol.

But I get 5w40 Helix Ultra for R580 from a local spares shop so I've been using that.
