Service time for my 130i - recommendations?

Hello all,

So as of Jan-2016, the car is going to be beeping at me to do a service, so I figured it would be a good idea to rather do it now whilst I am on leave.

I've not done much research on this yet (will do so in due course), but thought I'd put word out on this forum to get some advice and recommendations:

1) What engine oil to use? Previously at the dealers they used Castrol, but more recently it seems that Shell is the approved oil now? Do I buy from the dealers, or shop at a local spares shop? Also - what about Liqui Moly? I've only heard good things about their products.

I should probably also add that I have a recurrence of the ticking lifters, so hopefully an oil change should sort this out.

2) Is it worthwhile doing any sort of engine flush?

3) Any other thoughts / comments / tips / recommendations?

Thanks

add ceratec onto of your new oil it should help the lifters even more or if your going with lq then ceratec is added(its an oil addictive thats proven its worth in most motors iv worked on)

since your in jhb

theres alexander
gizmo
tunetech
budler(my recommended choice if gizmo(warren)is busy) no offence to the others but those are the two i have used and neither has let me down

enquire about gearbox oil and diff oil change if its never been done might be an expensive service but atlas you know its done and the car will feel better

change plugs
filters the usual stuff

Just a quick update: started doing a few things like changing the cabin air filter, topping up fluids etc. the last thing on the list is to do the oil change.

So I popped in at the dealer this morning to hopefully buy a few things. One thing mentioned is an oil filter socket (part number 8330 0493 936), see pics below.

The parts guy tells me they are not allowed to sell this socket to the public.

So at the moment I'm stuck, can't proceed further.

1) does anybody know where to obtain these? (Other than ebay)

2) does anybody have one which I could perhaps borrow for a day, in exchange for a 6-pack of your beverage of choice?

3) would a normal strap-type oil filter wrench work on these BMW filter housings?

Thanks

Most BMW's use the same socket as most Volvo's.
86mm 16 Flute oil wrench.
Or a 27mm socket. Not too sure.

I used a three fingered metal type of tool from Ampro as I also couldn't buy the wrench from Volvo.
Just have to be careful not damaging the filter housing.

So I tried old faithful yesterday evening - my dad's trusty strap-type oil filer wrench.

No issues at all. Proceeded with the oil change, and then the epic mess and clean up operation thereafter, I'll post more details about this at a later stage.
