Semi Slicks on 335i?

I'd be cautious about putting semi-slicks on your road car. You have to know clearly what you'd be in for with those tyres. They are hard, wear quickly and take quite a long time to heat up properly before they start delivering increased grip. The protracted time they take to warm up means that they actually have less grip than normal road rubber when they are cold. Forget this just once in adverse conditions, and they will bite you badly.

Another thing that might bug you eventually is their propensity to flick up stones and road debris when they are at full operating temperature. In addition there is a limit to the number of heat cycles you can subject them to before the rubber starts to go off.

Your original question was regarding the gearbox risk etc, but i don't think it's a unacceptably high risk. One thing is for sure; when they are up to temperature and delivering full grip the feeling is fantastic.

Personally I'd spend the money on up-rated anti roll bars. That will give almost the same performance increase with better bang for your buck in terms of longevity.

A semi grips better than any road tyre at any temperature , and you won't break your diff unless you constantly launch your car like a plonker ...

A semi has better wet grip than any road tyre .

The bad thing about semi's on the road is that they are incredibly noisy . Sounds like you've run wheel bearings , resonation sounds like an old bmx tyre .

And I don't know about the other brands, but the only road legal Bridgestone is the RE55 , RE11 not allowed on the road

Yokohama NEOVA's are also road legal SEMI's, ran them on my previous M135 for about 3 weeks bedore selling the car.

Awesome grip, no road noise.

thanks for the replies guys, but i should have been more clear.

i want to use them purely for 1/4 mile at the tracks (tarlton / odi)
im thinking of slapping semis on my stock 18'' rims as i have 19'' rims as my daily's now.

so when i do some 1/4 mile racing - i will slap on my semi's.
when warming them at the track - am i going to break something?

I run Yoko's road legal semis as a daily. A bit more road noise compared to normal street tyres. Great grip overall and performs brilliantly in the dry. In the wet it does not perform as well as the bridgestone performance road tyres.

If it's only for the strip why bother with semi's?
Rather go for a full slick or a drag radial

it will stick like crazy and i have to warm them up properly
will i not break something?

Depends what power you putting down. Side shafts and CV's may not hold up when you making big torque numbers. There are after market options for for those. Speak to the guys at full race engineering.

what is the max torque that my stock shafts can handle?
so in other words - if i slap on semi's for race use only and get to the line to warm them up with my 600nm - will i break something?

All depends on how much abuse your car has had.
Ive had the 17" hoosier drag radials as well as the 18" Mickey Thompson semis on my car for several events, and i still havent broken any C.Vs nor side shafts.

But thats not to say it wont happen...

did it decreased your quarter mile times?
by how much?

Difficult to say by how much, but the do definitely help with traction.
Ive read somewhere that a proper set of drag radials will help with a good 1/2 sec if you're battling with traction.
Im sure if i had to launch my car the way i do with stock street tires, i would smoke them for most of the 1/4 mile.
If you're spinning, you ain't winning.
