Scary E60 530d Problem

So I took my new 530d for two new rear tyres yesterday.

When they lifted the car up and the weight of the wheels was hanging on the struts/shocks, the front left strut fell completely out of its mount and the wheel was hanging at a 45 degree angle!

I had just driven 1700km with the car like this, which just scares the S**t out of me, especially considering that through the karoo I wasnt exactly doing 120 km/h.

They managed to get the strut back in place and lower the car, and obviously the weight kept it in place. I limped the car to my Mechanic and he will assess it today.

Any of you heard of similar issues?

Sounds like a broken shock mount which collapsed when an opposite force was applied :thumbdo:

I had this EXACT thing happen to me with my old E46.

Went to Hi-Q to replace shocks, as the car lifted up just heard a bang and both shocks fell out of the broken top shock mounts.

Upon inspection I saw that both front shock mounts were destroyed, the rubber and bearings keeping everything in place was in shreds.

I have absolutely no idea how it happened as I am a very conservative driver, I never go over speed bumps fast or anything like that. I was quite concerned because I completed a trip from PTA to PE and back the week prior.

Luckily I was able to source 2 new shock mountings from a agent for under R1500.

Not something that I want to experience ever AGAIN!!!

The previous owner of my E60 replaced the front suspension, completely.

Which is why at 241k she is still tighter then a 16 year old on prom night.

Try and see if you can do this, budget was like 25k for all new components OEM.

Exactly the same issue here, shock mounting being replaced today.
