I know for the e46 its not such a big deal. The only thing that may not working correctly is the tv mode as it may be stuck in 4:3 mode. Here is a mail I received from the dealer in regards to the same swop for the e46. My headunit is the old style 4:3 satnav, tv, tape, shuttle unit.

"This unit is simply plug and play and is the same head unit I had fitted to my car.
I am assuming the client has already got nav or tv fitted to his vehicle and is not simply trying to replace the existing head unit as he would then also require the other control units.
The pin connections at the monitor were the same for units with the MKIII Cd and MKV DVD Nav units
The MKII unit had one difference as far as I can remember, it has an extra loop for a earth but is no problem to add
Some vehicles only came with TV modules and no nav units, these connections at the monitor were also the same
The client may need to re-code the Nav unit for the large screen which is no problem as I have the hardware and software to do this
If the client had the small screen he may have an older TV module which does not support the wide screen format and would cause a smaller picture on the screen
The X5 tv module can be fitted to any I-bus system which then gives the option to switch between 4:3 and the wider 15:9
If the client removes the older Tv module from system and I code the nav computer the picture would then appear normal at 16:9"

Hope that helps
