Running 2 different brands of tyres front/back

So i bought a set of BMW Motorsport wheels this past weekend which i'm realy happy with!

Hassle is, they have Dunlop 6060 (225/40/18) all round whereas my current set-up is (255/35/18) at the back.

1. Should i leave the (225/40/18) all around <<< advisable?

2. Replace the rears with new 255/35/18 rubber? <<< This would have to be a different brand though because the Dunlop 6060 doesnt make the required size

Opinions?

i have been previously told that one should at least have the same brands on the same axle. If the type/performance of the tyres are similar you shouldnt have a problem.

If you have michelins ps3's and achilles on different axles it might upset upset the balance of the car as either the front and rear would have considerably different amounts of grip and would react differently in some situations.

I would use 255 tires at the rear. I don't think you will enjoy how your car will corner with narrower rubber at the rear.

Try to get a set of rear tires as close as possible to the same thread pattern.

I would think that you will feel the difference of grip with different thread patterns more in the wet.

Alternatively sell all the Dunlop tires and put the cash towards a full new set.

Don't put 225 at the back, the rear will be terrible. I made the mistake when buying tyres and I did not enjoy taking corners. Back end was horrible. Go with the 255 and it is acceptable to have two different brands. As mentioned as long as they are on the same axle there is no hassle. I now have two different types as the narrow tyre wore out in two months (yes I was doing burnouts tho). Also try not to put a higher profile as this affects some rotational something something, or so I was told, which in turn causes your car to rev up slower. Someone please help on that last point or slap me if I'm talking crap.

Thanks guys!
I do have 255/35/18 runflats on the rear axle.

What if i left this and had the non runflat Dunlops up front?

I have Yoko non-RFTs in front (225) and Pirelli RFTs at the rear (255). Have only felt negative handling effects at the limits of cornering, otherwise no issues in ordinary stuff

Never mix RFT's with non-RFT's! Different brand front to rear is fine provided the same on each axle. Ideally try and use tyres that have the same or similar grip levels front to rear. For a while I had the Conti RFT's on the rear and the Hankook RFT's on the front - car felt very good overall.

I've had "Them-Stones" RFT 225/40/18's on the rear for 10,000kms now. No issues. Grip isn't what it use to be but it still holds well. Don't get me wrong the 255's stuck like it was melted to the road, but the 225's gets the job done. Paid R1900 per tyre for the 225's. The 255's was going to be R4k each. So it was a no brainer for me.

I actually went to BMW to get confirmation on the matter and the Service Manager gave me the ok....

Here's an interesting link to compare sizes:

i run sticky 255/40/17 on the back of my 330d and 225/40/17 not so sticky at the front.. with sportspack and the heavy diesel engine up front i find the handling very neutral, which is what i prefer..

generally speaking sticking to the same make/size on the same axle, but different front to rear should be fine..
