Don’t go into Africa in a stupid car that doesn't have a spare wheel!!!

So what do you do when you have 300kms to go and you get a flat tyre?

....you continue till the tyre disintegrates, then continue on the rim, till the rim is so worn out, the shock mounting touches the ground, then you STOP, 150 km’s from the nearest town and elephants all around

idiot should have called bmw oncall.. why would you still drive when you know the rims is getting farkedup, drive as far as you can on the tyre then stop, simple. I'm pretty sure we have a spare tyre in addition to that

If you're going into Africa and you do not take a spare wheel, you deserve to get mauled by elephants! What a pillock! Run flats are not NEARLY sufficient for off road trips! It's like driving to Cairo in a Polo and expecting a smooth ride there! At least take several litres of tyre mousse and a pump with, if you don't want to take a spare wheel.... :facepalm:

we drove from Cape Town to Kimberly, and had the outer tread start to peel of the tyre. We called numerous bmw dealers en route, as well as all of the tyre dealerships, none of which had a replacement tyre. We managed to get a tubeless tyre of the same size in Kimberly, which got us back to Cape Town. We then managed to get a replacement runflat here. Quite an expensive trip.
On our roads the runflat option is not always a great one:bawling::bawling::bawling:

Unfortunately, I think the development of the run flat tyres, were based on test data from the USA and Europe, because that's where 90% of these tyres would be used, making them unsuitable IMO, for African conditions. There were some RF tyres manufactured locally, here in PE, but I believe that line had been closed, as BMW decided to use an overseas supplier. That probably explains the cost!

Question: If you bought an E90 and converted back to tubeless tyres and spare, would there be place in the boot for a spare?:thinker:

You do get a marie biscuit tyre, but I doubt a full size will go in the back without seriously cramping your space.

Has anyone got Firestones and claimed from a pothole puncture? Since they got that road warranty, I'm just wondering how quick they are to pay up. I know you pay for the thread used, but still...

It's really not worth the money spending on the marie mag as you cannot drive very fast or far. And if you have a flat, EVERYONE will notice, so no use trying to hide it.

Off topic, Wynand, have you had any potholes with the scoobie? How the alloys holding up?

the 335 does not even have space in the boot cubby to cater for a marie, so if you have a full boot you cant fit a spare. I carry a tin of tyre weld to carry me through:cursin:

Dude, that thing is a MACHINE! I went looking to get stuck last week end , but to no avail! It just chugs along at any speed, mud, soft sand up hills, grass, rocks, you name it! I'm playing my heart out! Now to chip it for some more power.....

It falls in a category of its own, because no softroaders have low range... Yea, you're right, I should have taken the XT turbo, but sadly economically it was a bit out of my reach, although I must say that mine is no slouch, 121kW, free revving boxer motor with a 6500rpm red line AND I've out dragged a few cars so far, but sadly no ST's! It also handles extremely well, due to all wheel drive, so yes, I'm happy!
