Repair / leave?

Hi guys,
Yesterday afternoon some ancient rustbucket decided to change lanes in a roundabout that left me with some nasty scrapes and a minor dent in the right rear fender and rear bumper.
Guy has no insurance and no money and broker already confirmed that it's as good as having hit a lamppost. Auto Atlantic repair centre quoted R15k without anything needing replacement; half of it is questionable like diagnostics and respraying an undamaged door for "paint blending".

Car is a 2010 E90 325i with motorplan extended until June 2016, mileage 74,000km, original owner, still spotless condition.

Had the car been newer it would have been a no-brainer to go with insurance, but it's 5 years old with only 9months motorplan left and I will probably sell it after 1 to 2 more years, when it would have accumulated a fair amount of depreciation. I also have had an unfortunate spate of insurance issues in 2008-2011 that affected my claims record, and I would like to keep the current clean run that way.

I now have three options where I would appreciate some comments from those with experience please:

1) Insurance repair. Excess is R3k and premiums shall rise by approx. R80/month, but unsure how severely it will affect a higher value vehicle down the line.

2) Cash repair at a cheaper alternative. I imagine cost would be around R6k, which is more expensive than the excess and 3 years' premium increase.

3) Do nothing; buff out and touch up the worst and just sell it as-is down the line. The few marks after the years are not enough to bother me. Question is whether the value reduction of such reasonably minor cosmetic damage would be more than the cost of cash/insurance repair? (not sure yet whether the next purchase will involve pvt sale or trade-in).

Pics would definitely help here! Sorry to hear about this though, not nice that we share the road with those rusty wrecks!!

5 years old with only 9months motorplan left is not an old car ... Well not to me :)

I would let insurance take care of it and have it repaired by a BMW panel beater , If insurance is paying , I wouldn't care less what the bill came to or what they had to repair . Excess is not so bad .

If you leave it , it might start rusting , peeling and looking shabby , Might hurt what ever price you would get when trading in or selling privately .

If you can live with it leave it.
Someone nudged me from behind at a toll booth causing a crease in the bumper the length and thickness of a bic pen. Average quotes were R12k, so I buffed a little with polishing compound. Looked a lot better and lived with it. Trade-in time, i told the dealer I did'nt want to repair something so small and someone else thinks the worst happened, and or end up with a comment on motorplan. They dropped the trade-in price by R2k and everyone was happy. My excess was R3k anyway and my NCB points remained intact.

Thanks for the comments guys. I took some pics, bad lighting etc. but it shows the extent. The black marks are not tar or tire marks, that's where the paint is off to the plastic. The powder blue is the kind donation from the other car.
Tried some washing & buffing afterwards tonight but it didn't really improve matters :(
Have to say, the looks in a neon light after a wash do make me reconsider if I can live with it - if not, are there any suggestions for panel shops in CT that will be able to do a reasonably decent job without breaking the bank? At the very least just get the dent out and touch up the worst of the black & white areas.

Auto Umhlanga would have quoted me alot more if I had to take my E46 in for damage like that , R15K isnt bad . They quoted R25 k just for the back bumper :(

You should have it properly repaired . That looks bad to me . Looks unloved the poor car .

If it's not important to get it fixed through BMW then try a good panel shop with your insurance. It's not such a bad looking repair and I am sure most good panel shops will sort this out 100%!

Since you are in CPT area, maybe give Brighton Body & Spray a ring and see what they say. Speak to Mike Jnr. I had my car's front bumper resprayed by them and they did a good job matching the Sparkling Graphite perfectly which is not the easiest colour. And they have done a lot of work on other cars in our circle of friends and family.

I did consider that, but insurance told me that the premium increase will be the same regardless of whether it's a R1k claim or a writeoff - so once a claim is lodged I can just as well go for gold and have them respray the whole car for all I care. Or is there something I'm missing?

BTW - are you from Foglar Sound? Used to buy quite a few Scan-Speak drivers from you and your dad back in the day :)

Then the options are indeed to leave as is, repair out of pocket or claim and pay the increased premium. Think of the resale value in years to come if the damage is left though. The car is still really young actually.

That is me!

If you got a case number at SAPS and his details you can go to the small claims court. I had to deal with people that say they don't have money well then they must sell that piece of sh.... and pay me. Yes its a bit of a hassle but after a year you will have your money. I have done this 3 times in total with people that have rust buckets like that or just plain bad drivers. and in the end with effort I got my money. The most recent one was with my wife and this guy actually had money(Audi driver). well News for him he is not above the Law and a year later I got my Money. Your claim must just not be above 14k I think so just claim for the Max the Small Claims Court allows you.

Meantime get a few more Quotes for I am sure that is an quick repair if you get a good panel shop and not to costly. but you give the high Quotes to the court.

If you have the owners details contact him and ask him if he is p repaired to pay it off or otherwise it will be court.

I just refuse to let people like that just get away Scott Free

You not ordering panels on the vin number, so no need for a bmw approved centre.Take it to a reliable panel beater that can repair and respray the areas.
I would not be able to leave it as such and live with it.

Right, so the aftermath: I took it to GP Panelbeaters in Stellenbosch, who quoted R3500, that was only R500 more than my excess (and R13k less than the Auto Atlantic quote)
Well, you get what you pay for. The spraywork was not bad, but the polishing afterwards was just shoddy and there is still a dull spot (ironically close to where the original damage was).
The claim was "nobody would see something was done", and I guess if it's a little dirty nobody would, but when all clean and polished in the sunlight it's possible to spot some differences.
Had to take it back twice for re-buffing, and then spending two sessions of about 1h with elbow-grease myself to get it to look decent and it would really take a very clean polish, the right light and a very careful eye to spot anything. Suffice to say I'm not exactly welcome there anymore when they said it looks "OK" and I said I was told nobody would see the difference...
If I had to choose over I probably would have just taken the premium increase and repair at Auto Atlantic via insurance; all the effort with polishing and finding lifts and sitting in dilapidated waiting rooms ain't worth it.

On the upside, one cannot see any paint matching issues, they didn't steal my audio gear and my premiums and NCB are unaffected.

As long as you are happy with the repair! I cannot understand why relatively minor repair work costs so much these days - but at least there are still places out there that do good repair work without trying to get rich fast.
