Remember the Human

just my 2 cents.. feelings, emotions and choosing to feel offended.. in essence if I read someone saying I'm a cake for whatever reason, I chose too be offended by it.. this does not compute to me.

let me change it a little. everyone has a sense of humour and everyone also has one of those days where everything seems to get to them too much. When reading the statement, Rodney, you being a cake, it can mean a totally different when I'm having a bad day versus when I am walk on sunshine.

believe me, I am known to throw a few of my jokes around and thinking it was ok but if there are 30 people going head on with you, the joke becomes a tad sour..

so in my personal and humble opinion, what Arbee is trying to say is, just be aware of how the person will accept your criticism..

bloody hell, the word criticism took me bloody 5 minutes to figure out and even spell told me.. don't be a dumb ass..

You cannot sell this place as a "community" or "family" and then state that it is but the internet and people should not be offended..

Rather sell it for what it is then: a shit slinging tool and be done with it.

To be part of the Fanatics Community, should we all not be sensitive to others feelings, or what ever you want to call it, no mater how awesome we think we are?

:ty:

This is key! The characteristics of this forum is not to demoralize members. I will agree that it is being portrayed as such, especially recently.

However, this forum (BMWFanatics) is much more inclined to be a family, motoring, safe environment. I agree as well that sensitivity is key in making this work, successfully.

To add, if its a person you know and have a good relationship with then calling him a cake might be a personal joke!

For example, Rowen called me a chootiya sometime back on this very forum. The post is somewhere around. Did i take offence? No. Why? Cos the relationship and understanding that Rowen and I have is different to the relationship i have with Rodney. I have not met Rodney, by me calling Rodney a chootiya, i can only expect him to take offence to it.

I don't see how people here can say words don't have feeling and that it is your approach as a reader to the word of the poster that determines the outcome of the (your) feeling or understanding of the word.

What about racist terminology? You want to tell me this is expressed with no feeling from the poster and that the reader can choose to be offended by it or not? Then why do we deal with it so harshly? This is one example among many.

Words are written with feeling. Literature would be nothing if there was no feeling put into it. A romance novel is not written with the thought that someone might portray it as a horror. Just a comparison.

It is the way YOU as the poster or writer portrays what you are saying that plays the biggest part of how a word or sentence is interpreted.

HOW OFTEN DO WE, ON THIS VERY FORUM, FLAME OTHERS FOR TYPING IN CAPSLOCK? We tell them not to shout. Does he turn around and say "but it's you who sees it as shouting; to me it's fine..."? No. He put it in capslock to prove a (louder) point.

You are not typing on this forum for some soulless object to read. You're typing it fully knowing that a human with feelings sits on the receiving end. Remember that.

Lets have a healthy conversation here please? Just putting this out there BEFORE it turns nasty.

i agree, although I would suggest just closing the thread before it does.

ZMC has his opinion, and I have mine.
They are different and we are entitled to them
.

I understand the premise of his argument, but do not agree.
Thats where we are at.

I am unable to convince him otherwise and I am not to be shaken from my position on the matter either. As such, I respectfully have nothing further to contribute.

You have touched on an important point there bud, most "disagreements" are about extolling the virtue that an individual knows best i.e my opinion is better than yours and I know best...

This is commonplace on the forum with a few examples being the diesel vs petrol saga, "testing of cars", best oil to use, tyre choice, etc....

If people were mature enough to understand that an opinion is just that, an opinion...not a fact and because its your opinion(gleaned from proffesor Google) still does not make it gospel....

I disagree. What our parents taught us, in general was correct, however things like 'feelings' no sorry. What most people lack is emotional intelligence and awareness of self.

I cannot offend you, unless you choose to be offended, again that is your choice.

Oh my sack buddy! You have won the internet. If anyone lets text on a screen written by some dweeb on the interwebs offend them then they deserve to be offended. Oh, you're offended? So what? Am I supposed to give a fuck? No, and you sir are an idiot.

Our society and culture teaches us these days that we need to take peoples feelings into consideration and that 'causing offence' is tantamount to genocide. It's bullshit. Utter and complete leftist libtard bullshit. If I punch you in the face, please, be offended. I totally accept that, but this molly-coddling and smothering with politically correct tin foil to protect delicate darling's feelings is a symptom of societal decay.

Having said that I'm not advocating an emotionless and calcified culture, the answer is simple. All you need to know in life, to paraphrase Jim Jeffries' summation of the 10 Commandments, is "Don't be a Cunt."

Tell you guys what, if someone calls me an arsehole on the Internet I would react the same way as if you called it to my face. And then you must understand that there would be consequences in doing that.

So put whatever you want on the Internet if you feel 'brave' behind your keyboard. But just one day people might meet and the instigator mustn't be upset if he gets a hiding.

I do not differentiate between the spoken and written word. If the intent was to hurt or offend someone, the medium in which it's done becomes irrelevant.

And yes, I'm from the East Rand and mess with cars. I do not possess social etiquette

Nick, I like your posts man :Thumb:

I always say, whatever you say from behind the keyboard, you need to be able to say to someone's face. So does not matter how you want to coat your online behavior, but do know that it takes a mature person to behave in a decent manner.
