Rattling Sound in Engine...Timing Chain Tensioner??

Hi folks: I have a 1997 Z3 2.8 litre with 45,000 kilometres. When engine is cold...beautiful. Once it warms up, it develops a rattling (almost sounds like a diesel engine)... good oil pressure, oil level (recommended synthetic) is good. Car is working great...

But the noise is annoying. Thinking it is the timing chain tensioner... anyone experience anything similar or can offer any advice. Unfortunately, there is no dealer anywhere near where I live.

Thanks
Sean

Surely not on 45 000km. That engine isn't even properly run in.

I had timing chain noise on my 318i. The sound was audible when the car idled. Cold or warm, made no difference.

Once you up the revs a little, the noise goes away completely. I ended up replacing both the chain and the tensioner.

I know... depressing with only 45,000 km... but with snow from November to May... it kind of limits the driving time. Vehicle has been stored every winter...

I guess I'll start with the Tensioner and go from there.

Many thanks.
