e36 3.2 M....

That could be your vanos :fencelook:

Put the car in Nuteral, handbreak up and let the car idle, open the hood n listen rev the car higher using the acc cable...

If its coming from the front of ur engine... then its the vanos :fencelook:

hope this helps

hmmmmm..... @ 4000rpm you start hearing it? dont rule out bearing knock just yet.

Get it checked by your mech asap!

Mine started in the same fashion as you described. Rebuilt entire motor bottom up @savspeed back in Jan 2011. Not cheap

I hope this is not the case with yours, but get it checked asap, before it gets worse. These cars are known to run bearings!

That rattling noise at 4000RPM is not the car, but your teeth as you quietly cr@p yourself.

Now change oil regularly as these cars can run bearings if not looked after when high in mileage.

Thought as much it's a loose cover or something cos that motor in your cab sounds very healthy....but then it's like a 15 yr old car so anythings possible
