Rattle/Shudder on Left side of car

Question : I have this weird noise on the left side of the car when I travel between 100-140km/h, Not sure what is going on. Took it to the "dealership" for a check, monkeys told me there was no "irregular noise". Not sure whether they think that as the car is coming to the end of its Motor Plan, they will just start denying the existence of the problem. Has anyone experienced this before problem on there E90, its a 2007 E90 330i btw.

Is the noise constant, gets any worse while cornering?

Just took it on the local testing grounds, at between 140 and 160 when you let off the accelerator there is a humming noise almost sounds like a flat tyre of sorts. Have not tired it on the a corner, concerned the wheel might come loose.

So only when off throttle, or most noticeable? What's your car's mileage? Manual or auto?

yeah, seems like its only noticeable when I lift off the throttle at that speed. The mileage is 97300km, the car has a manual transmission

I would check wheels/tyres for any out of round problems or flat spots. If you can actually feel a vibration I doubt it could be a wheel bearing - or it would have to be really bad for it the cause the vibration that you can feel. But an out of round wheel/tyre can do this, and when unloading from off throttle is usually at it's worst.

Maybe best to take your car to a tyre place and have them check the wheels and maybe balance them - take note of the rim and tyre surfaces while running on the balancing machine for any buckles or flat spots.

Let us know what you find! My car is also close to the end of motorplan with low mileage, so also trying to make sure all crucial issues get sorted out ASAP!

Just took the car back to the dealership, took some foreign dude for a test drive (what-a-chop). Took the car between 140 - 160km/h, the chop hears the noise and diagnosis a lose wheel arch cover, now why on earth does it only occur during this speed, surely this cover will move at any speed above 120km/h, not just at the specified speed. Starting to wonder on what criteria is used when hiring monkeys like this, scary...

Another thing, if the cover was loose and making contact with the wheel, surely there would be tyre markings on the cover....:idea:

Doesn't make sense! Unless of course one of the front wheel arch covers are loose - and if you can't see scuff marks etc. Make sure the access panels in the front wheel wells are secure - that is a potential cause for a rattle if loose I would think. Try and see if you can replicate the noise by tapping and knocking on various parts of these wheel arch covers...

this sounds almost similar to the noises from my car. I have just been told it is tyres. My car sounds like a boeing. Its not a rattle but a whine. Also when I lift throttle, mine is at lower speeds as well.

Give some feedback if you get yours sorted sabre?

Sure, will do. Taking it in tomorrow.
The wheel arch and tyres theory is not something I am willing to accept as being the route cause of the problem. I suspect a loose or even worn bearing, my wheel arches are not scratched nor loose, the tyres have been on this car for the past year, never hit any pot holes in the past year either. Just a mystery I tell you!!

Who knows maybe the noise has been there before, probably haven't noticed it as being the good citizen I am, I try and obey the speed limits on the local roads and autobahn's :rollsmile:

Is the noise in front or rear ? Is the noise only at this speed range ? Then I would expect a balance or tyre problem , or a vibration at a certain frequency only . Is it under load or when freewheeling in gear -driveshaft /coupling problem .
Wheel bearing noise should appear when cornering and that side wheel is loaded .

What brand, model and size tyres do you have fitted? I have heard that Bridgestone Turanza RFT's are prone to being noisy because of their ribbed tread pattern...

Just got feedback from the dealership, turns out the gearbox rubber mounting was worn. Kinda doubt that will solve the problem, guess I have to test drive the car tonight on the local autobahn. Will keep you guys posted on the outcome....
