Hi all,

busy buying a E39 540i, not the car is in all round good condition.
It is not the owners main source of transport and doesn't drive it very often but, I took it for a spin yesterday morning and we didn't go that far but after stopping I could distinctly smell something like old oil burning.
It might be just because its been standing and not being cleaned regularly or a bit of oil dripping on the manifold, or any reason what so ever but I just want some input on this.

I did read in BMW 540i Erratic Idling post #6 Truvalu explained the problem as it was identical. see post here:

topic open for discussion

Hi

I have this idea that it could be a dead Cat!

My E39 does that and does not use ANY oil, neither drip...

Will replace mine when budget (lack thereof) allows, and will surely post the results.

why not just remove the cat converter ?

doesn't this make better performance in any case?

I know in the my GS bike is does, yank out the cat converter, fit aftermarket zorst and bob is your uncle/aunt which ever way you look at it
