Progress on the 535i

So I recently bought me a 535i E34 1991 model with 188k km.
I knew there was some work to be done, and I immediately had the whole car resprayed. The progress can be seen in the photos below.
I'm happy with the outcome and next i will focus on getting the transmission sorted. I drove it this afternoon for the first time after the body work and then I broke down with a burnt clutch and broken release bearing.
I think it might have been man-handled in its previous lives. :cursin:
If you guys have any advice/comments on E34 ownership, please feel free to post replies.

Almost there...

Turned out to be only the slave cylinder that wasn't installed properly.
Whoever worked on it last, didn't put the bolts in properly and the whole thing worked itself loose.
All's well.

Now, to set the Air/Fuel ratio correct because i think this one is running rich.

I would recommend fitting the up-rated banjo bolts on the top oil sprayer as the normal ones have a tendency to work itself loose....if that happens it is goodbye cam.
While you are at it also check the rockers for damage they have a tendency to break on these motors.

Also get rid of the M badge.

Edit: Also if you fit a blackwidow chip it can run circles around an M5 at top end.

:roflol: This is the most bang for the buck mod it seems

I've had to replace the clutch slave cylinder after being stranded without clutch and having to be towed in! :uhoh:
So after lots of scrambling for the right tools and lifting equipment, i replaced the part.
Here's how worn the rubber seal was.
Next on the list:
Front Left thrust arm bushings
Rear pitman arms
Oil change/Air filter and Oil filter
Interior work (to be done myself)

After this I replaced the master cylinder as well and bled the system numerous times.

The clutch still takes too low.
Could it be that the clutch itself is worn?

I will check local spares places and also Suspension specialist and the like.
Nice deals on Ebay with parts from the UK.

Guys, we bled the clutch system again today and even pressure bled it - to no avail. That clutch needs to be replaced. I am super down about it, but i do realize it will drive great again once we do this.
Besides, just like brakes, clutch is also a friction part, so it is just a matter of time for them to go. :banghead:

Has anyone done a clutch on a E34 before? What is there to look out for?

Yes it could be, I suggest you change it before it snap. On my E90 320D 2008, recently, I had burnt clutch and towed the car to my mechanic after opening the gear box he also found that release bearing also ceased and now I have to replace the whole clutch kit plus the bearing....
But hey thats a very good machine you have there...let us know whats the progress

Bled the clutch with a pressure bleeding method from the bottom up, instead of pumping the pedal.
I found this video very useful.

Quite a few bubbles came out and after that, the pedal pressure seemed fine and also the engagement of the clutch was as high as it 'should' be.

All's fine for now.

Some clear front indicators will tidy the look up nicely. I ordered a couple for my old E34 520i from Schmiedmann. Best bang for buck aesthetic improvement.
