Power steering pump failure

Hi guys, I turn out left into the road yesterday and when I wanted to turn straight again the steering suddenly felt very heavy, like i had to turn a tank. Had to put in a lot of arm work. I immediately thought it was the power steering pump. There is fluid in the tank, so it's not a leak. I took it to my mechanic and he confirmed it to be the pump

So I leave the car with him and he was going to let me know if he could find a 2nd hand pump from someone breaking up E46s and get back to me. So this afternoon he phones me back and says the car is done and the new pump and work was R4.4k and a new pump would cost 12k from the dealers. The work was done and now I have to pay 4.4k.

Is this what power steering pumps cost to replace? I thought I read that Masterparts had it for less than 2k new?

Am I being taken for a ride and can someone in CPT help me to get this done cheaper and with good parts still?

It's a bad time for me to take a 5k hit.

That seems steep, my steering pump broke and was replaced under warranty so I'm not to sure about the cost but I remembers seeing 1.8k. I took my car to Bruce's Spares in Kenilworth, they normally have the best price and service.

Sorry to hear dude. I hate it when when Mechs just do work without consulting you first. Hope you can sort it out.

New power steering pump for a E46 330i at Goldwagen: R1600. Got the price last weekend.

So yes the mech is ripping you off big time.

Tell mechanic you got a quote from ... for R1600 plus vat for pump and R850 for labour , you will accept that if he is more .

OK, CPA is well in effect. No work can be done unless quoted for in advance. If it it done client does not have to pay.
If quoted for but cost increases, dealer has to cover the difference.

Hope that helps.

Just did PSP on 325ci and was R 2700.00 all incl.

Sounds like he is ripping you off.

Ask for an itemised bill before you jump to conclusions, maybe other stuff was changed as well.
