Post headjob, pre-startup checks

Hi guys,

I just completed the headjob on my E39 M54. I want to ask if there are any pre-start up checks that you guys can suggest. The project was completed over a VERY long time and I am concerned about some plug numbering etc.

I am thinking in this line:
1. checking all the cables - preferable with some clue as to what must go where.
2. Piping (vacuum/oil/water)
3. Some OBDII checks that I can do with the system on, but not started.

Item 3 is the one that I am most interested in. For example, is it possible to run the diagnostics software and check interactively the correct plug connections. That is, monitor the oil pressure sensor and then unplug it to make sure it then fails and then replug it. Go through all the plug like this, maybe some other sensors as well, i.e. rotate the engine by hand to see if the cam sensors trigger.

Your advise would be much appreciated.

Hi, i am sure that the electrical connections on these engines cannot be connected wrongly as each plug has a different connector that can only fit one place. Also, first turn over the engine by hand to make sure there are nothing catching, ie valves, etc. If i were you i would check all the electrical cables/wiring individually and see if i have missed any connections. Remember to put oil and water in! Just my 2c. Maybe ask Gizmo, the resident M54 wizard on the forum, for advice as well.

Thanks for the reply. I did turn the engine over by hand a few times after setting the Vanos timing. I agree with you on the plug. I am pretty sure they are all in the correct place. Oil and water, very important. I only have one connector still floating around without a hole to plug it into. It is not from the harness box, it is a connector on the passenger side (left) fender and cannot see anything it needs to plug into. I guess it is unused...

So, I thought I would just post a pic of that connector. The red arrow shows where it splits off the loom going to the left front light cluster.

Any ideas? Can someone maybe check in their E39?

Yip, that must be it. I have not replace the filter box yet, thus did not remember that there is a switch on it.
