hi guys

hope this is the right section

i want to buy my son a i-pod docking station for about R3000,and a i-pod,he loves his music

now, idiot here doesnt understand these things(still have a double tape deck on my hi-fi),i want something that can pick up radio, play cd's,etc

have looked at a pioneer, but can only use an i-phone(which is R9000)
he showed us a samsung, that can be used with the galaxy pocket, samsung galaxy s 2 and 3.

what i want to know is,can these only be used with phones?or are there other methods,as i dont want to upgrade the thing every time a new phone comes out.

also what else is on the market and is good for R3000(docking station)

thanks guys
colin(old skool idiot:rollsmile:)

An Ipod docking station would only be for an iPod or iPhone not for other brands of phones

This config should work with any (smart) phone:
Bluetooth stereo audio module:
http://www.comx-computers.co.za/AA-...apter-Information-Price-Buy-Cheap-p-53660.php

Speakers:
http://www.comx-computers.co.za/CA-...ystem-Information-Price-Buy-Cheap-p-61363.php

Well, you should be able to buy any hifi with an auxiliary input and use the bluetooth module. That way it will also work on future phones. The only caveat is the bluetooth audio does get compressed, so it is not bit-perfect, so not suitable for audiophile use, but most people will never notice (since they listen to compressed mp3s anyway).

Then its just a docking station not an iPod docking station

so what goes on the rest of them?

If the main reason is to listen to music then get an iPod.

Mp3 is more common but essentially the same just different versions/compression

Personally if you want other features other than just ipod connectivity, then there are other docks out there that will work other phones, mp3 players, usb, sd cards ... with cd and fm radio function as well as your ipod.

However these particular one don't really come cheap and the sound they produce is quite good for its size, but then again i'm talking about the high end ones like HK, Kicker, Bose...

Personally I'd get him a home theatre system. Not a huge component type, but a decent sounding compact one, they usually have all the bells and whistles at a fraction of the cost of the dock. It will be able to connect to his PC as well and then he can switch to his ipod, fm radio, blu ray, usb, dvd, etc... when ever he feels like. Another plus is that there's a hugh range to choose from, so you're not limited by price or features.

"Mp3" is just a format of a audio file, while a "Mp4 is a format of a video file.

Or you can play your ipod through your receiver and the whole family can hear the music through your home theatre system :=): No need for a docking station...then charge the ipod through a normal usb cable - computer or power socket.

You are looking at about R3000 for a "mini hifi" which can play a wide range of formats and has a built in docking station. The Sony stores have some nice ones as well as denon, pioneer etc. search the Internet for mini hifi with iPod docking station. Have a look at http://www.sony.co.za/product/cmt-fx300i and the http://www.sony.co.za/product/cmt-mx500i and then there is http://www.sony.co.za/product/cmt-dx400 My personal favorite is the Geneva brand though, a bit pricey but The best sound I have heard in a mini hifi ever and they look gorgeous!

Yep, Sony, Lg or Samsung are all on the same level. It will boil down to personal preference.

Most of the new amps have a iPod feature, so by plugging your ipod's usb cable into the amp it chargers the ipod and give you total control of the ipod via your remote, not forgetting great sound.

Colin, i bought a Sony "Boom box" recently for my patio/entertainment area. On special at Makro then R1999... Fantastic sound, ipod dock, usb, aux input and also radio tuner. No cd. I have since had a few parties and was received well and commented on by all my guests. Its mobile, its has the retro boom box lights (which can be switched off). Really recommened it and your son will love it.

The mini hi-fi's at the same price or more cant compare! (in my opinion)

For R3k why not invest in a proper Hi-Fi? I recently bought myself a second hand NAD stereo amp that I found on Gumtree for R800 and paired it with a brand new set of Monitor Audio BX2 speakers which I got for R2800 and some decent cables. Sounds quality is way better than mass market hi-fi's like Sony, Pioneer etc... You can pick up second hand hi-end brand amps and speakers for next to nothing if you shop around... Look for brands like NAD, Rotel, Marantz, Denon etc...

Now my amp is pretty old, so it doesn't have all the fancy bells and whistles that the new amps have which I think are actually novelties. You just need a RCA-3.5mm cable and you set or get an iPod dock with a headphone jack output and a remote if he wants to control it wirelessly.

Oh and this is the amp I have.

http://www.hifiengine.com/gallery/images/nad-3020e-3020i.shtml

I know it doesn't look all shinny and fancy, but it'll blow the socks off any hi-fi sold by game/hi-fi corp:rollsmile:
