then you have the mercs which have similar engine performance and have to up the power just to lug the extra weight around

Or you can go okay in 1999 BMW made the 318i, 320i, 320d, 323i and 328i so you have the second best BMW 3 series of 1999 so look for the second "best" Audi A4 or Merc C of 1999.

According to the Wiki, the C350 was a 2005+ car which means that the C320 was the closest car to ours.

IIRC, C55 was launched in 2004 so you can add that to your list, as it was around while the E46 M3 was still in production.
