Petrol consumption

So I`ve been wondering what is the normal consumption on an E36.

Planing a trip to the coast and want to know more or less how much to set out for petrol and toll gates. :fencelook:

Petrol on an E46 which is pretty similar to an E36 , you should get to Durban with a quarter tank remaining from full . Then you finish that quarter tank driving around in one night . Depending on how many nights you staying , each night would require about a quarter tank and the trip back another 3 quarters .

Bruce, with my car, E46 325i 2003 model manual, I got 6.8l/100km on my trip to Uvongo last year. This included full boot, mommy and the 2 kids, plus the chihuahua, and I stoppped EVERY 45 minutes about for the kids and dog to pee...
Also when leaving the toll gates, I would push my car hard if you catch my drift, and also the last 1 1/2 hours I drove the R56 and the R612 instead of the N2 and opened my baby up doing some low flying... :mmm:

...anyway, so yea, I got 6.8l/100km.

Trip back, when stopping at my house, total +/-720kms, on one tank, got 7.1l/100km.

Best ever was 3 years ago, from Pretoria to White River in Nellspruit, got 6.2l/100km there and back.

Well I`m driving down to Stillbay.

In normal day to day driving I get between 9 and 10 kilos per liter, had never taken her on the long road coz to Potch doesnt count.

I hardly drive til under a quarter tank, and get between 400 and 500 kilos per tank.

Will there be a big difference between day to day driving and long distance driving?

Oh ja its a stock 318i.

Yes there will be, cause your cars economy mode should kick in after about 80kms of driving.
My car is still a bit heavy the first 30-40 minutes of highway driving, but then its as if she just starts sipping the feul...

Dont know if your 318i is the same or not?? :dunno:

PS: In town, the way I drive, at the moment, I am standing on 11.2l/100km, did drive a bit concervative the last few days, but still gun it every now and then.

so if I get between 9 & 10 km/l in town, then it is safe to safe I can get up to say 13km/l on the open road?

The open road is what bmw's are made for you can probably expect figure similar to what cois posted for his car.

One thing though, remove the spoiler before the trip, as on the open road you might actually notice worse consumption due to the wing, or set it to its flattest setting if possible. The whole thing of open road driving is to reduce drag (not that kind), guys in the states found that they would get 1 - 2 less mpg due to having roof racks on their cars.

Cant see why your 318 might get even better consumption than that? :dunno:

In my opinion with your, if you drive steadily and constant speed, you should get between 13-15 km/l. The 318's on the open road were very frugal. That is of course if the car's drag co-efficient is not altered by a huge touring car wing.

Sorry, I couldn't stop my self

To be honest if I go back and look at it she did get a bit heavier on juice after the spoiler than before, got 12km/l in town before and now if I really don't drive hard and don't start her unnecessarily i get about 10-11km/l.

How does one work out the l\100km?

When you drive conservatively (+-100kph) you should get insane consumption with the 318i.

When I had mine (an E46 though) the worst consumption I would get is around 10l/100km and that is in town and flat out all the way.

This is from a 300km trip I did in my 318i into MP and back when I tried to get really awesome consumption:
