I initially thought it was a valve-operated resonator which allowed you to bypass the rear silencer, but this wasn't the case. That round object is actually a speaker of sorts.

No it isn't. It houses a speaker for the Active sound module, inserted into the piping system so the sound waves travel as though the sound isn't synthesized. As used on the i8's externally fitted Active sound system. Science.
