Performance airfilters are a waste of time

Guys

Do you really think that there is a power boost with performance intake systems?

not really any gain, but you can clean them so they pay for themselves... sound and a little throttle response is all you really get...

On a F/I car you might see a difference, but on a N/A car you might gain better throttle response and a throatier sound. Nothing more.

Depends on which car you have and which intake system you get. Putting in a fancy Panel filter has no benefit over the OEM panel filter. Fitting a CAI to an E36 has shown a fairly decent BHP gain providing it has a good heat shield and works far better in colder weather. Airbox on E46 and newer is as about as unrestrictive as you can get so you won't ee a gain with a CAI. As the others have said you will get the induction sound but won't see more BHP-in fact with no heat shield you will lose BHP by sucking hot air straight in whic is crap for combustion

This has been tested by bms and the dci does increase performance. Not by much but it does add some benefit. The car was driven around until hot and there was no decrease in performance as opposed to no dci. There is obviously enough air going through the engine area when on the move. The sound in a 135i with dci is great. Worth it I say.

My biggest concern is filtration effeciency.
Some of these filters only keep out bigger birds and stones.
Small birds and smaller stones might get through

Riaan335 that is why i only use K&N they test using the same standards set our by motor manufactures and achieve the same oer better filtration than paper :) guess most of the good brands will do the same...

Cool, hopefully getting a BMS dci soon. I will keep a close eye on it though

There have been some noted dyno gains , about 3/5 bhp in the e92 with drop in filter alone. For anything higher, you'd need a remap( not a mickey mouse superchip remap), charge scoops and perhaps a larger intake elbow for about 10 bhp. The best bit, with 412 under the hood- you're not gonna feel the extra 10/25 bhp.... The sound from the v8 with the filters is intoxicating

Birds????????? :slow: Okayyyyyy!!!

I always buy a K&N purely for the cost savings. My OEM filter (agents only) is around R500 whilst the K&N is R780. It's a no brainer.

Jirre, don't you have a sense of humour? It was a bit tongue in cheek, and overly exaggerated. But still valid.
What micron are the OEM filter rated at, and also the K&N and other after market filters?
If an OEM is 3 micron, and an aftermarket 5 micron, then surely there would slip more dust particles through. And if you neglect the maintenance on your aftermarket filter, or clean it with an aircompressor, you're gonna have trouble.

BTW, the micron figures mentioned above is not fact, only numbers to state my point. I will try to get correct figures...

On a oiled filter it depends on how you oil it....

And on how many birds have already gotten stuck. I would suggest that to improve filtering performance, roll it in some dirt after applying new oil

On E36 328iM i've found a little gain but only at very high rpm (>5500)

i.e. dual cone filter compared to stock (debaffled) airbox. See post #7 here...

http://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/showthread.php?tid=8296

My take is that if you are trying to improve airflow above that what your stock intake is designed for, you might have to
consider an after-market intake system. Probably the only option if you are going the FI route.
